Finest 2e Product

Post by Jyrdan Fairblade »

I've been feeling oddly nostalgic for the 2e days lately, so hopping off of Slimykuotoan's Module thread, what do you think the finest 2e products were?

For my part, I'd vote for:

Volo's Guide to Waterdeep

Complete Thief's Handbook

Spelljammer

Planescape

The first I chose because it brought a near-microscopic level of detail to Waterdeep, which was very very useful, whether you were coming up with an action- or RP- heavy adventure.

The second one I chose because in addition to bringing back the Assassin and Thief-Acrobat, it brought a wonderful degree of depth to the thief class that had me wanting to run an all-thief campaign.

The last two I chose because they were about as zany as 2e got, and were such a completely different paradigm of gaming - AD&D had never really seen their like before.

I liked Powers and Pantheons a whole lot, and I'll probably take some flak for this, but I got a lot of use out of the Complete Book of Humanoids.

Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog (way better than Arms and Equipment)

Wizards' Spell Compendium Volume I - IV (I classify it as a single item since its a set, but useful individually.)

Priests' Spell Compendium Volume I - III (same as above)

Van Richten's Monster Hunter's Compendiums Volume I - III (same as above)

Complete Book of Necromancers (finally a "Complete" book that was useful)

Nothing else is that memorable for me, minus, perhaps, the Silver Anniversary box set. And, maybe some of the Tomes box sets, like Rod of Seven Parts.

I liked Planescape also. The single best setting, in my opinion.

Others I liked:

Player's Option: Combat and Tactics

Player's Option: Spells and Magic

Sages and Specialists

There was another that had a complete wizard's school, including tower. I can't remember the name of it, though.

And my personal favorite...Arms and Equipment Guide!

I've never actually played 2E, but wouldn't be adverse to trying a game. I do however, have a lot of 2E material that I've occasionally used for ideas, descriptions and general comparison to C&C.

Ravenloft Campaign Box

Al-Qadim

Complete Book of Gnomes & Haflings

Complete Thief's Handbook

Arms and Equipment Guide

Monstrous Manual

PH

Legends & Lore

Return to the Tomb of Horrors. I've had a lot of fun with that.

The Shattered Circle. A dungeon with raptors in it, DM fun.

Complete Theif's Handbook. Probably one of the few good class books.

Complete Ninja's Handbook. OK, probably not the best but hey, its a Complete Ninja Handbook, how could I not buy it?

Viking Campaign Sourcebook.

Wrath of the Minotaur / Eye of the Wyvern. As 2nd Edition was beginning to slip, these two starter modules managed to greatly recapture the early feel of magic and wonder I had about the game.

Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue

Complete Necromancer

Sages and Specialists

Of Ships and the Sea

Thiefs handbook, the equipment section

I ran a fun "monster game" using "Complete Book of Humanoids", so I'll add that one too.

I have to echo the vote for Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog... this was truly a neat little product which fast became a favorite when I was running an AD&D campaign.

Other favorites... Forgotten Realms Adventures. Some of the earlier complete handbooks were neat... The Thief's having been already mentioned but I found there was some good in the Fighter's, Wizard's, and Priest's as well.

I really liked the 'Green' Historical Reference series though with the Vikings, Age of Heroes, and Mighty Fortresses being my favorites.

Oh... and Spelljammer rocked!

I like the Elves and Rangers Handbooks, the Viking and Celts Hisorical References, and the Players Handbook.

Aurora's Whole Realms catalog. One of the best values ever for any edition. Just make sure it stays in the DMs hands, some of that stuff may be inappropriate for some campaigns (mail-order, DaVinci's inventions, etc.)

Oh yeah, and the original Dark Sun and Planescape boxed sets. Years worth of adventure material in each without ever buying a supplement.

That's it. I'm buying the Catalog. Six bucks on amazon is a fine price to pay after such unanimous praise.

Go for it! It's a fun little book - the food and drink sections were invaluable for the campaign I ran in 2e where the PCs owned a bar.
