Minis

Post by Ramrod The Wizard »

As a recent convert from DnD (hallelujia!), I'm trying to see if the use of minis extends beyond WotC's grasp. My groups never used them, but at times with the clunky ruleset of the game we wish we had. So it boils down to this, are minis that important to the game? I really hope not.

Not in the slightest big. You don't even need a battlemat.

On the other hand, you can use both. I do and our group loves it. But we don't do square to square combat like the 3.X game. For us, it's more about general placement and creating a cool battle atmosphere.

And we like collecting minis.

We use battlemats, but thats more or less just graph paper with a sketch of the area. One day we'll graduate to a large dry-erase board.

They are required for precise, tactical Stratego/Risk play. Damnit. Oh, wait, C&C isn't a wargame or a simulation. So, yeah, they're rather unnecessary.

We don't use them for 90% of fights. We just talk about where things are and imagine. Some of my players were used to 3.x D&D and had trouble grasping two wolves moving side by side down a 5' corridor, but they've grown up some since then.
If there's a big fight, we'll sketch out a picture on a whiteboard or battle map and get our figurines out. We also use them for marching order and as a character sheet paperweight.

Oh! And welcome to the Crusade!

I use minis - metal minis, only. No prepainted plastic at my table. I also use Dwarven Forge rather than paperbattlemats. With that said, what I use them for isn't required, it's just a part of the fun and it's really really cool looking.

I use minis (DDM prepainted plastic ones), with dungeon tiles, WWG terrain and anything else I can get my hands on. I love 'em, and for our group it adds an element to game play (YMMV). I just don't have all the same silly rules about how many people can be in a space anymore.

Ive never used figures for anything more than a placeholder. Some folks need the visual reference, me included. ^_^

I like using mini's overall because it really is easy to describe placement to players and avoid confusion. Plus, sometimes figures like this can ad certain dramitic elements to a game. I still use the classic style of miniatures, almost never prepainted ones. I understand the necessity of pre-painted figures, but part of their harm is making them look the way I want them to.

I use them, because it helps the players focus on the action, and understand what is going on. We have a lot of interruptions in our game: kids, food, etc. and players can have a tough time understanding where they've been, where they are, and where they can go. I use "floor tiles" for my dungeon crawls in addition to the minis. You can see them at http://strangevistas.wordpress.com
