Castles & Crusades Wiki...

Post by Storm Queen »

I was considering starting up a C&C wiki.

It could contain house rules, help promote the game (and even the C&C Society?), lists of modules, monsters and the text snippets that have great ideas but may get lost in the boards. The idea isn't to supplant anyone else's site, but rather contribute to the community and provide an organised place for ideas, odds and ends.

Any interest in this?

Twould be nice if someone 'restarted' it. I believe one exists in basic form still.

It's a cool idea, but would take some dedicated work. I think the wiki would be a valuable resource, especially to potential C&C players.

I think it's a great idea though I for one wouldn't be able to commit any time to it for a couple of months due to my impending move. I'd love to assist tackling that project come October 1st!

C&C Wiki

Needs a lot of work and has been around a long time. I don't think houserules are a good idea unless they're segregated to a page of their own, accessible only after having been giving more pertinent information such as errata, links to official stuff and the like. I'm the one in charge of it, by the way, but I'd rather not be.

Hey Serleran. I've PMed you about possibly helping out with the existing wiki.

Hey Moriarty777 - it'd be great to get more people involved. Once the wiki gets going, contributions and assistance would be exceedingly welcomed!

Cncplayer.net is a great place and the wiki won't take away from that. A wiki just lets anyone edit pages and is mainly used for storing and organising text information.

Got it, and replied. I have also changed it so only members can modify it... so we don't get the usual Wiki-like practices of "I disagree so I'm gonna delete that!"

I'll work out how I plan to organise it and post something here.

With regard to yoinking wiki content on the forums for the wiki, what would be acceptable? PM the author first and ask for permission?

Permission is implicitly granted; if it is made public, it is public, but the author still holds copyright (if possible) to the works (so at minimum including "created by: [username]"), though TLG might have overall ownership, what with it being based on the OGL, and their SIEGE Engine which is trademarked -- That reminds me.... if you're going to post rules and the like, that must be included, but I don't know how to do it. I would also ask that things which lie outside the realms of the legal (such as conversions of non-SRD creatures) be left off the wiki altogether. So, something like what is in M&T and the PHB needs to be posted, or linked, directly, on the wiki if rules are going up on it. You might also want to ask Steve if there is anything specific that should be done... perhaps he will allow the wiki to be official?

Then someone who can reliably contact Steve better get him on board now.

Wiki Structure...

Post by Storm Queen »

Here's my initial idea for structure and layout on the wiki. A bold heading is a link from the main, index page to a subpage. Each - represents a subpage from the index page. So a --- heading is actually three pages under from the index page, e.g. Books > Castle Zagyg > Yggsburgh Index.
INDEX PAGE
Castles & Crusades Introduction

How do I get started?
Books

--Core Books

--Castles & Crusades Players Handbook

--Monsters & Treasures

--Castle Zagyg

---Yggsburgh Index

---Errata
Adventures

-Adventures [Index]

--Page for each adventure, links to reviews, errata, advice and fan tweaks to improve the experience
House Rules

-Monsters

-New Rules
Advocacy

-Promoting C&C
Links

-Links to C&C websites

Thanks, Rhuvein. I've tinkered with the starting page, and I've also started a project page on Blacktooth Ridge, which I talk further about over in the Adventure forum.

I've been thinking about writing reviews for the C&C modules. I believe I own all of them right now.

If this thing gets going and I write the reviews I'll definitely get them to you.

For specific IP query's as per rules, art, logo's and whatnot for use on the wikki site, its only polite and above board to email or call Steve and let him know about it. I sent him a note about this discussion, but as its the weekend I don't expect him to chime in till monday.

Hmm, I thought I was a member but can't get in. Mebbe, I'm thinking of your Yahoo group.
I guess I'll register then.

Oh yeah. This is a great idea. The BtR is such a focal point of the A series mods and of course is very popular. Now that I think about it, I'm amazed at the many ways it's being used within C&C and without (Greg Ellis comes to mind using BtR in his AD&D game).
[On the old site, BtR had it's own forum!! ]

I never had a Yahoo! group. It was a MSN one. That's been dead for about 18 months, or longer.

Haha, so many groups, so many years. Yep, I now recall your site. Hmm, was it Mythmere who had the Yahoo group? Oh well, probably doesn't matter at this point.

You have 100% permission for all non-incriminating posts from this Dangersaurus, regardless of site of origin.

Thanks! You could also consider posting your reviews on a big site, like RPG net, so they get more exposure. But yeah, module reviews would be welcomed.

I think the main things that would be relevant would permission to use the logo and to link to pictures of the modules and book covers. And probably use the flavour text on the main trolllord.com website when describing the products. I can't see where the need to quote the rules would be relevant (at this stage), and if that happened, I think we'd also have to invoke the OGL. (Not sure how that would work on a wiki just yet.) Do I try emailing Steve at the regular trollord address?

If by soon you mean in three months, yep, probably. Never email a Troll before a major Con, especially over a weekend. Hell, the website even states it takes 30-35 days to get a response, sometimes longer... especially if its right before GenCon and Steve's too busy to notice he has email. :)

However, I do remember e-mailing Steve some years ago, and he actually got back to me like 3 months later. His return e-mail response to me was worded like I had just e-mailed him earlier that day.

Hmm, I'll avoid linking to official artwork and so forth until we get permission.

However, we could still write stuff (e.g. new monsters, treasure, house rules etc) under the auspices of the OGL. Any idea how that would work in a wiki environment? Could I put the OGL on one page and then link related materials back to that?
