Alternate AD&D 3rd Edition Player's Handbook Question!

Post by Mad_Irishman »

Hello, I found this alternate AD&D players handbook file under a C&C link page. Most of the rules are just like C&C. There is also a Unearthed Arcana version with more rules. My quesiton is, where can I get more of those books besides the two. I don't see any author information. If anyone has anymore info about it, please let me know.

Also, I love the C&C system, it's lit the spark in me again for good ole dungeon romps without being a tactical genious. Thanks Troll Lords
I can't past link, but I hope you folks know what I'm talking about. The books have the origianl covers for the 1st edition.

Anyways, when I get enough posts, I'll post a link.

Looks like a personal fan page. I suspect you'll have to contact the author of the site to find out more. TLG certainly had naught to do with it.

No OGL, copied artwork belonging to another entity. I'd certainly avoid it like black death myself.

This guy's page ("Perkin's Site") has been listed on the Links, Web Resources, and Interweb Utilities thread for at least as long as I've been interested in C&C. I hadn't bothered to download it until now (figured it was just another house rules document).

That's... well, that's the whole dang farm he's giving away right there.

Its CS Perkins. He used to post here a lot, but I haven't "seen" him in a good while.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I have a hard copy of the PHB you mentioned (thanks, work!). I like what he has done with it, but the class balance is not good at all. Some of them are just broken. I also question some of the weird things he has done with spells, like the HD cap on fireballs. Overall, I think it's a nice bit of work, but I think he needs to playtest it a lot more and work out some of the bugs.

One thing: its meant to more closely emulate AD&D but with the C&C rules (and some houserules from others; looks like it has Traveller's difficulty system) so you get things like HD caps for spells (which C&C doesn't have, mostly.) Balance is subjective and not a catch-phrase for C&C, though sometimes something obvious will spring up (like a class that advances twice as fast as a rogue but gets wizard spell progression and fighter BtH.)

But, yeah... its Perkins alright. Says so in the pdf, right under Revised by...

Thanks for the replies, neat idea. Just wondering if he did more work like that. If he changed the artwork up I think he could do well with those products.

This is what I was referring to, not the ephemeral D&D definition of balance. I meant it literally, as in there are huge disparities between the various classes relative to their XP requirements.

The last things I remember CS saying he was working on was more material for the UA book and his own monster book. That was months ago.

Bingo. TLG doesn't need IP theft this early in the game. And isn't there another Mad Irishman around here as well?

Actually there is a member that goes by it that has been here longer, has a website and is a pretty respected character sheet creator around here.

So your claim is invalid...just sayin'....

Ahh that would explain it. I was worried that the real MI might get confused with someone else.

Er, no, another Mad Mick, it would seem.
I've been using this moniker since maybe 1990 or so, but it's not exactly unique...
