PDF: The PIT v1.5 (New & Improved!)
For anyone who's interested, you may now download
The PIT (Full Color, 300dpi) 1.5 17.74mb
Changes from the 1.0 version:
1 - It's now 300dpi instead of 150dpi. (I was surprised by how little difference that made in the file size, but it should improve the printed appearance.)
2 - I've added "bricks" to the pit's wall, added some blood on the wall next to that big splatter near entryway #2, and generally cleaned up a variety of rough spots in the graphics.
Example:
3 - I have given each page only a 0.25" margin on each side, which allowed the "tiles" to be 8" wide (instead of 7.5") which also led to the next change
4 - The map is now distributed over nine pages, instead of seven. (The map is now nine 8" x 8" tiles, instead of seven 7.5" x 10" tiles.) So it'll cost you two extra sheets of paper to print it, but you'll actually use less ink because the amount of overlap from one tile to the next has been reduced to only 0.125" on all edges. Also note that the new page distribution completely eliminates the clipping of the outer wall that had occurred in v1.0.
The distribution of the tiles is shown here:
Once again, Enjoy!

For anyone who wants a professional-looking, one-piece printed version of The PIT, I will be happy to send you a link to the original, unchopped graphic. However, please note that the unchopped version is a whopping 128.31mb file (300dpi CMYK .tif, wrapped up in a .zip).
Furthermore, please bear in mind that having it printed at full size will not be cheap! I asked for a quote from my local FedEx Kinko's, and I was told it would be $10 per square foot which means $40 in this case, and that's just to print it. They also said it would cost approximately $5 per square foot to laminate it, and/or $5 per square foot to mount it on a foam core board (although that part wouldn't really be necessary, since mounting is easy enough to do for yourself, if you're so inclined).
That means the total cost of having it professionally printed, laminated, and mounted would be roughly 80 times the cost of the game itself.
So if anybody really wants that, just let me know. I ain't gonna hold my breath waiting for that to happen, though.
[EDIT: MyDataBus.com seems to have problems sometimes so if you try to download that PDF and nothing happens, just try again later. If you manage to download it and the file is hosed, please notify me because then I'll have to upload a new copy.]

Thanks 3rd Eye.
Couple of things . . . Staples is much cheaper and perhaps Office Max/Depot as well.
Lamination is $2.00 per sq. ft. and sheesh, I've already forgotten the 24X36 cost to print it on their plotter/printer. But it was very reasonable. And the quality of the paper is such, that you might not need to laminate.
Also, they can print the single pages on good quality card stock for $1.09 per page and again, no need to laminate. It's good to have options!!!
And you can upload your image(s) to them directly and pick your stock/size/prices and they'll print it at your local store.
Other local print stores are cheaper too, at least in my experience and area.
Also, would the full size image then be something like 33"X 25.5?
Thanks.

Thanks for all of your work on this 3rd Eye. I've got several gladiator themed miniature games I have been meaning to play for some years now, including some Cleaver The Pit. This is some good stuff. Costs to print and laminate are a bit prohibative, since I don't play these games that often.

Heh. And in the unlikely event that Kinko's would be cheaper on something, Staples will price match!

I just checked a bunch of other places, and nobody charges as much as Kinko's it still isn't cheap, no matter where you go, but everybody else is cheaper so yeah, apparently Kinko's are a bunch of thieves.
(Which reminds me: Did anybody else hear about the Evil Scam that FedEx/Kinko's tried to pull on everybody with the assistance and cooperation of Adobe?)
As currently designed, the image of the Pit is almost exactly 23" x 23" but counting the white background, the unchopped graphic is 24" x 24".

OK, checked again at Staples. $4.20 per sq. ft., so $16.80 to print the image. Not bad. If I laminate, I add $8.00. If I submit online and the order is over $20.00, I take $2.00 off total. Final price ~ $22.80 before tax.

I wonder
Anybody care to speculate on the cost of mass-producing a glossy, fold-up poster-like version to include as an insert with the game? Or by contrast, a folding heavy board?
(Y'know, for later, when the game is a $24.95 boxed set that people are fighting, clawing, and climbing over each other to snatch at conventions.)

Irrelevant Trivia: The full-color version of The PIT is officially 600% more popular than the black & white version, judging by download numbers.
Of course, I knew it obviously looked better; but I figured some people would want a low-ink alternative, assuming they didn't really care about graphics and just wanted a plain old hex grid for reference. Seeing the download numbers though, I guess most people don't mind splurging on the ink.
