Joy or Lament.
School starts today, and this year it isn't just my son going, but my baby girl as well.
I'm torn between feelings of joy at having a quiet house for the first time in several years and lament that my little girl is beginning to grow up.
Where do the years go?

Our son hit 1st grade this year. Our daughter started pre-k but at this school its all week like the rest of the grades and it's all day like the rest of the days.
Just got back from dropping them off.
Gotta admit...the quiet house is kinda nice.
Our 4-year old foster child will start pre-K Head start, which will also be an all-week, all day program next week.... have to admit I too am looking forward to periods of quiet in house!

I remember way back when I felt that way, now my son graduated (two years ago), and my daughters are in the 11th and 8th grades, I now rejoice on the first day of school.
I'm reminded of those Staples ads: with the dad frolicking and dancing through the store, while his perturbed kids staring at him, all to the song "It's the most wonderful time of the year...."

My youngest boy is starting Kindergarten while the older moves on to the third grade. Ah, the third grade: the first time I skipped school -- the good ol' days. Anyway, my older son is making sure to inform the younger that Kindergarten is not REAL school, because he will still have to take naps. To which I replied that I'd love to have naps. He said, "Me too."
Joy and lament.
My daughter started her junior year of high school last week. And she just got her driver's license (uggh)!

Joy and lament here too - but mostly joy. My daughter started 3rd grade and my son started 1st grade two weeks ago. It does seem like the time has zipped by, but I am glad to see them grow up. Both are interested in daddy's gaming stuff and want to play "that adventure game". I think I am gonna start a C&C campaign for them next month.
My son has a friend at school who has a dad who used to play D&D. I think the dad and the boy are interested. That'll give me 4 players. My daughter has the option of inviting one of her friends too so I may have as many as 5 players.
At this point my daughter has rolled up a Wizard (Sally the Wizard) and my son has rolled up a thief (Robert the Snake). If I can get a fighter type and a cleric type, then we're good to go!

I did get a kick out of the fact that I felt different about my daughter started school than I did when my some first started.
With my son I was, "Get out there and learn ya something!"
Not to eager to kick my daughter out there.
It was humorous when I dropped her off in her class. She's not shy or timid. There were adults everywhere in the classroom trying to gather the will power to pull themselves away from their child for the first time in their life.
I told my daughter to go find herself a seat. She waded through the parents, elbowing her way when necessary. Two parent were blocking the chair she wanted so she tapped on them and said indignantly, " Excuse me. Do you think you could move somewhere else?"
Another humorous note. After getting back home from school today my son asked "Daddy? When does next summer start?"
Yeah, he's as much of a fan of school as I was as a kid.
