City of Brass by Necromancer GAmes, art cover by Peter B.

Post by Treebore »

This is pricey, even at Amazon, but man!! This thing friggin RAWKS!!

I am maybe 2/3 of the way through JUST book 1 and I already know this thing is worth the money and then a bunch more.

They have not only done up the City of the Efreet the way I imagined, they have gone so far beyond what I imagined I am blown away.

If you have any interest in this I strongly recommend you get it. Now.

I agree. This is a very fine product, and well worth the money. The art is good (if sparse), and Peter's cover drawing is excellent.

When my players get higher level, I'm absolutely going to find a way to put this into my Wilderlands campaign (and it won't be hard to do at all). I like the backstory quite a bit, and it integrates well with the gods from the Book of the Righteous, the pantheon I'm using in my campaign.

What do you expect when you have Bowbe doing the writing? That dude has a hell of an imagination. Case, you rock, chieftain.

I also have to pile on the praise for CoB. As I said over on the NG boards, I mostly bought it to be loyal to the crew and to NG [I foolishly thought I wasn't in to planar adventuring and/or 'arabian nights' kinds of stuff] and was more than pleasantly surprised. It is chock full of awesome and very inspiring locations. It sorta reminds me of Vault of the Drow, except of course on massive steroids (three big books versus what, 48 pages?) - I only make this comparison because for me, VotD was for a long time my archetype of a setting you could build off of. CoB is right up there, baby!

Looks nifty, Amazon has a heck of a deal on it right now but the budget is a it tight, hope they hold the price where it is for a while ($44.09).

Unless everyone realizes how awesome this is and runs out to buy it. Only 1500 made.

Hmm... out of curiosity... how many Wilderlands Box Sets did they do? Was it a similar size run or was it larger?

Smaller, by 500, as a I recall.

I'll wait on this. Unlike RA:RE, I think this one was released too close to the announcement of 4e, and its sales will be affected. I imagine in 6 months the price will have dropped to almost nothing.

If that happens I will definitely buy more.

I will add to the chorus, COB is just awesome. I had the privilege of reading through most of Casey's ms and hand drawn maps before it was released and I made sure I snagged a copy of the boxed set when I saw it at Origins back in July. I essentially had it for free but still was willing to shell out the bucks to get it. It's that good. Case and Scott outdid themselves on this one.

I'm eager to get it but it will have to wait as a few other products I want to get are ahead in the 'must buy' queue -- one of which is another Necromancer Games product...

I am also caught up in the goodness that is the CITY OF BRASS box set. Um, in a word, it's frackin' gooooood. I actually had to stop reading the 3 books included in the box set in order as to slow down the excitement of running a campaign based on this product immediately. There's a lot of information in this box set to be sure, and I havn't run across a bland bit yet.

I'm sure its great. NG does good work, and those involved in this are some of the best of that group, if not the best. I just can't afford to buy this right now. Damnit. I do think it will go down in price, but maybe not... I got screwed in trying to get RA:RE (my fault) and I'd hate to see this jump up to the same price tag because then I'd just pass altogether.

Didn't somebody say it was on Amazon for like fourty-some thing dollars? The box set retailed for $75! Yeah, it's still a lot of bread, but I'm telling you, in 10 years, Wilderlands, RARe, and City of Brass are going to be worth some cash. Snatch it up as soon as you can.

I grabbed it off Amazon for $44 (and 2-day free shipping). Which is I think about what I got the Wilderlands boxed set for as well.

Is this one similar to the Rob Kuntz tournament module?

Err.. well if you call 400 pages of material 'similar' sure.
It's based around the old City of Brass from the early days though. So I understand anyhow.

Turns out that with the map booklet its about 450 pages.

To avoid any similarities I never read any of RJK's COB stuff. In fact I've waited till now to put in an order for the Kenzer release, which I am told is only about 50% Rob's original work as he had broken his leg in several places and was on the mend while trying to finish up the project for Kenzer. Certainly there are superficial similarities, due to the subject matter and shared influences but hopefully that is all. For years before our version finally hit print I have encouraged others to purchase Rob's version as well, because although I haven't read it, I have little doubt they would work together quite nicely.

I have great respect for Rob, he knows this and we get on just fine. Hell we even smoke the same rare brand of Cigs... which we found out at Gen Con we had both recently switched to!

Rob and Gary' co DM-ing for us at Gamefest in Milwaukee is one of my all time favorite gaming moments, and was the experience that sold me on giving C&C a real try!

I know I have said this about everywhere, but I again want to thank the folks who gave Scott and my version of COB a shot and have been pleased with the results. It wasn't an easy project to take for initial reasons, and again for pure scope and magnitude of what we intended.

I appreciate comparisons to Vault of the Drow. Among many influences in product design, one of the things that I repeated over and over in conversations with Scott during development was that COB should be Necromancer Games's Vault, or failing that, at least be A3 and City State.

We were fresh off a pile of work for the Wilderlands, so we had a lot of creative inspiration to draw from.

For those worried about too much 3.x edition feel, I have pointed out that only about 130 pages of the entire 450 page product is 3.x stats. For the other 320 pages its Art, Maps, and a format similar to what we used in the Wilderlands products for Judges Guild. In other words, HP, AC, Alignment and lots of descriptive text.

I won't say it would be easy to convert such high level stuff to C&C ... just yet, but certainly as more High Level support hits the shelves for C&C the tools will become more readily available.

Thanks again.
