Seen this being discussed on a couple forums now about the new 4e digital initiative / game table / whatever.

This comes from one of their blogs?

Am I just so out of touch with the modern gaming community that I do not see the "goodness" in this?

It seriously seems to me that this sort of thing would piss off their fan base more than energize it.

With luck, WOTC will experience a BattleTech-level backlash and go back to the basics again. Someone tried to pull a similar stunt with the BattleTech franchise and got burned badly, while the "Classic" BT line is still going strong.

Digital minis I can understand (I guess)... After all, there's already a market out there for tokens/etc and such for digital gaming tables. But randomised?

Huh.

I already have a big problem with -physical- randomised minis (although the secondary market from that has led to some way cheap "group-finds"... you say Commons, I say Plentiful Cheap Session Fodder).

The whole 4e thing certainly will prove interesting (as many have discussed). Bright side of it all to me is it's one of those discussions that made me aware of C&C...

Well, from what I've seen it does not appear (so far) that the minis will only be available as random packs. I strongly suspect that the only reason we're seeing any mention whatsoever of random minis (not that I'd put it past WotC to spring it on 4e gamers, but I doubt they'd announce it beforehand) is that there is a rather vocal contingent of D&D Miniatures players (ie: the non-RPG skirmish game) who are worried what the 4dvent of the new edition will mean for "their game".

WotC already has had some level of success with the M:tG Online, so I'd suspect that they would want to do the same thing with DDM, but it really seems like they probably have too much on their e-plate at the moment... Gleemax, the DI, online Dragon and Dungeon magazines, etc... I wonder how much of it will actually be available for the big 4e rollout...

Thanks for the insight... I pretty much agree with you here and I'm curious to see where it all heads.

On a completely different subject-note, it seems as though we have some Seattle friends and the Vogue in common... wonder if we know each other in "zee ARR-ELL".

On a side note, from what I've read on the 4e gameplay, it's being designed so more monsters are used per encounter. This strikes me of a way to increase the purchasing of their miniatures line.

For me it would just be increasing the number of Fiery Dragon Counters I print out.

Heck, when I ran "Against the Giants" I had to print out like 12 Stone Giants, 20+ Frost Giants, and 15 Fire Giants, beyond what I already had. This was for C&C, BTW.

I'm definitely not WOTC's target consumer. I'm too cheap.
