If I must pick one, I'd pick the greybox. I'm not really a FR fan, though. Sometimes I wish they'd live up to their name and really be forgotten. [Not really -- I don't mind that other people enjoy the FR.]

I loved the 1e set with the supplements like Waterdeep and the North (coolest Beholder art ever on the cover) and Empires of the Sands. Once they passed that level of detail it began to get a little crowded in what was once an enjoyable setting. Don't get me wrong, some of the later material was well done (i.e. Serpent Kingdoms and Lost Empires of Faerun) but it seemed to squeeze everything too tight and there just wasn't enough room to move after a point.

While I preferred the tone of the greybox I had to vote for 2nd Edition.

Faiths & Avatars and Demihuman Deities were some of the coolest FR books out there. Yeah, they had "splat" elements to them but the sheer amount of religious organization fluff mixed in was awesome.

I liked the few 2nd edition FR box sets I picked up as well.

Just wasn't a setting I played in more than a handful of times though. I had some Greyhawkin' to do!

Generally for FR I ignore Novels, and anything related to the Avatar Trilogy. Other than that most of the 1E and 2E material is very useable.

I even like the guide books.

The novels are one area that never interfered in my games. I read the novels for fun but will only bring in things from them on occasion. The ToT was a good idea very poorly executed.

There's a sample chapter up for the new Drzz't book...wow, feel your eyes pop when you read it.

Yeah, the idea of Time of Troubles was awesome, but I agree that the execution sucked, which was reinforced by the modules.

I read the Novels too, even liked them and incorporated the story ideas for my players to do, but they were far from canon.

Nice. Sounds like things in Faerun's future do not look good.

Even if it's a lead in for 4e (possible), I think it will add some new life to the setting. Plus there're all those ruins to dig around in now...I wonder how Undermountain will fare in the latest version (I know they killed off Halaster (boo hiss)). It was time for a reset anyway, the ToT era didn't really change that much (wild/dead magic areas) but it seems as if there's going to be some blasts from the past (Netheril!!!) coming up.

Some of the people on the WotC boards are thinking this is from the middle of the book (I guess it could be but why?) and that there's some more explanation that isn't shown. It'll at least be an interesting read IMO.

They must have missed the part that said Prelude at the beginning. I imagine the future novels will show hints of what happens in the future and gear up for the Spellplague. I'm glad to actually see Oboulds kingdom survives since I loved the idea of this from the last series. I'm definately going to pay more attention to the novels for awhile to see what happens.

One thing I have to give WOTC is that even though there is a RSE every other week now it makes sense that it is leading to something. The jury will be out to how much I use but I'm interested as a fan of the Novel Realms what's happening there.

I have some FR stuff from all eras. Honestly, I like them all to one degree or another, but never liked the world overall as a whole. The MOST FR gaming material I ever read was the 3rd edition Campaign Setting. I read that book cover to cover, and frankly, crunch aside the 3rd edition book is fantastic! So much information in one place. IMO, the best FR product released to date... although THE NORTH box set is damn cool too, but just doesn't cover all that much info comapred the the 3eFRCS.

I voted for "my version" which was a mix of 1e & 2e supplements.

I enjoyed the early book but they just kept making morte & more & more.......

1e all the way. In this implementation it was the only AD&D setting which could compare with the "setup" of the Classic D&D Gazetteers; enough information and lots of details to run games, but no canon to follow. And no Times of Troubles
I wish Dragonlance had been written in this way...

I'm not really sure. Which "version" was the old Baldur's Gate game?

I sort of prefer the one where FR, as a whole, doesn't exist... just little bits and pieces of it. Therefore, an amalgam homebrew with only the parts that are useful (which isn't a whole lot.)

Too bad they couldn't keep FR toned down.

Grew up with Greyhawk, but I enjoyed the first edition gray box of the Forgotten Realms... it was the first big world after Greyhawk I was exposed to, so I really was fascinated to see someone else's fantasy vision make it to print.

As someone posted above, though, I think Faiths and Avatars for 2nd Edition Forgotten Realms is in the top 3 of my favorite supplements ever... it was a great, detailed book and I used its style and presentation extensively when I wrote up deities and clerics for my homebrew. I'm still creating a 'sphere' driven priest class for C&C because of that book, while leaving the military-bent cleric as is.

Yeah, ToB was supremely badass.

Think I might start up the original BG game, I never did complete the Tales of the Sword Coast (or whatever it was called) expansion.

The other expansion that I was aware of was called Shadows of Ahm.

I think that was the name of the main BG2 game. ToB was the expansion for that.

Damn, why can't I remember the Tales of the Sword Coast name? Hmm. As I recall, I played Baulder's Gate and 2 expansions.

OK, pulled out my discs so I can be sure for now.

You've got the original Baldur's Gate. Big stinking quest towards besting Saervok (or whatever his name was)

The expansion for BG was Tales of the Sword coast. Added a large dungeon. This is the expansion I never completed.

Then BG2: Shadows of Amn came out. You could lay this one without BG 1.

The expansion for BG2 was Throne of Bhaal.

You are 100% correct sir! I never played the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion... that makes me want to play it. Fuhgetaboutit. I just got a 360.

All this talk on good computer RPGs is making me sick to play...
