Buying Up Junk

Post by serleran »

Alright, so I buckled and went to the "World's Largest Yard Sale" (as it claims to be) earlier today, waited the few minutes of impatient annoyance for them to determine they would open, paid the $2 to get in, and then started the hunt... came across some very interesting things, and all for mostly nothing.

I snabbed:

Heavy Metal Soundtrack (on vinyl; double LP album) - $1 [pristine condition, like it had never been used]

KISS (on vinyl; 6 different LPs) - $30 [a little tatter from opening the casing, but no scratches on the LPs at all)

Combo record and 8-track player - $7.50 [works, has spare needles, and is clean]

Nintendo 64 with controller and accessories - $15 [works]

Nightmare VHS board game - $1 [other than the box having a corner rip, this game is untouched]

GE vintage 70s toaster oven - $6 [works and I like it better than later models because its all dial-controlled and has more settings than many newer ones; it also has a wood facade and not the post-modern stuff]

Hand crossbow - $25 [works (I lost a bolt by shooting it earlier; long story); black metal hunting crossbow and came with 6 bolts]

Fitness equipment - $10 [got one of those pump exercise balls, some expanding strap things, and a row machine (yes, a row machine; I love them); all in like new shape]

And some other miscellaneous stuff for my yum's family, like a Lionel Electric Train Set ($50 in perfect condition) and whatnot.

All in all, I don't think I did that bad, and I do think I'll try to go to the next one. Junk is awesome.

Sounds cool. Where was this at?

Hah, love that game! I used to have a copy, but loaned it to someone, and then forgot who. Naturally nobody remembers being the one who borrowed it. I think I saw one or two expansion sets for it, which would've been cool (using the same tape over and over again does eventually get old and predictable). A lot of those VHS-based gamers were just silly, but Nightmare was one of the fun ones.

Oh, if you've got a digital camera, I'd love to see a snapshot of that. I recently stumbled across a similar (new) item that I'm planning on picking up from my local Big Lots. It's a combo unit, with a toaster oven to the left, a little coffee pot on the right (makes "4" cups, which really equates to 2, but uses a permanent filter, which is spiffy), and has a little "frying pan" on the top (which if you look closely, is just a small metal dish that sits above the toaster oven and gets its heat from that!). Hilarious, but very handy.

Sounds like you made a pretty nice haul. Were you lucky enough to get the KISS albums with the inserts still present? For awhile during the '70s they'd always add something fun to every album. I don't remember all of it, but Rock & Roll Over had a big full-size sticker of the cover art, and Love Gun actually had a fold-up "gun" you could assemble... there were others, but that's all I can recall. Unfortunately whenever you bought the albums second-hand, that stuff was always gone.

Aye, even under its other name "Atmosfear," its fun (and on DVD, now.) I need to get the expansions, too. Baron Samedi is funny... :)

Oops, I said "gamers." That should have read "VHS-based games." Fortunately you seem to have understood what I meant.
Atmosfear was the one I had. I didn't know it was on DVD now! That's excellent. Do you know if they expanded it with new stuff? It would be great if they included the old expansions on the main disc now.

The DVD version (which I convinced my fiance to buy like last year at Toys R Us) has different things, and is somewhat random (not entirely, but more so than the tape which is linear.) I don't know if they've made any of the character expansions like they did for the original, but maybe....

As to the KISS LP question: unfortunately, they did not have any special inserts, but that's ok. I bought 'em to play 'em. :)

Is that six now, after you fired one? Or was it six, now five that you've fired one?

It was 6; I fired one and now its five. It was even a special weird orange color... oh well. Story goes like this:

After assembling the thing (it did not come pre-built) I took it outside to do some target practice and to adjust its line-of-fire (crossbows need to be "centered" so they don't "hook" or over/undershoot [ie, aim lower, or higher, than focus,] just like the terms in golf.) First shot was a simple practice, but it penetrated the barrier completely, and went into the woodlands beyond... that damn crossbow has some power! I tried to follow its likely trajectory, out to its supposed maximum range, and could not find the bolt... at all.

Now, I have some idea what to set the centers to, but am afraid of losing another bolt if its wrong! Damnit.

Sounds like fun. I never went to a garage sale or flee market, but now want to.

My dad had a crossbow he built in high school shop class-- full size... thought he would test it out in his bedroom with a dartboard dart. Shot it through his ceiling...through the attic...and through the roof of my grandpa's house.

Lucky for him granpa only had one leg and couldn't chase him around to beat his ass.

I love going to things like that. Here in East Texas we have Canton's "First Monday", but it's never on a monday . It is a MASSIVE, flea market, and I mean MASSIVE.

I think they estiimate it at 100,000-300,000 visitors to this flea market a month.

Crazy good stuff and I love just looking around.

My dad made a crossbow in shop class, too. It was out of maple, but the bow was steel. Very powerful.

Betcha they don't allow that these days. Not even here in Texas.

They didn;t allow it twenty years ago in my old CDT class. I asked.

Then again, maybe it was because they knew abut the chlorine thing, and the incident with the niotrogen dioxide cloud, and the time I asked for some protactinium...
