C&C Basic Players Guide - C&C for kids

Post by dmrey »

Hi ...

I've been playing C&C for only a few weeks (thanks to Treebore and Skype). I started because my teenager voiced an interest in game design. He is really big into all things medieval: knights, epic battles, swords ... and I thought it would be good to introduce him to some classic table top fantasy role playing. I remembered what it was like with the old red box OD&D (my only D&D set), and I was hoping he might get some ideas as he sees some basic RPG combat mechanics played out. Maybe if he takes an interest as a player, and eventually as a GM/CK, he might start fiddling with house rules and such.

3.5 ed D&D is too expensive and too complicated. I found the free Basic Fantasy RPG online and started reading it ... but again - too much to take in. Then I discovered the simplified system of C&C. I downloaded the Quick Start Guide and liked it. Then I bought the Condensed .PDF ... and finally bought the PHB and M&T books. After playing online C&C with Treebore, I'm wanting to get my children involved (9 and 15).

I'm not trying to complain, but it seems that the books are geared towards adult players who may have experience with D&D. You wouldn't know how simple the game plays because you wouldn't discover the combat system until page 118 (obviously earlier in the other pdf versions). The books are beautiful, and I recognize that there is some order in the outline of topics, but I get lost in the details. Imagine how my bright 9 year old or ADD 15 year old would feel (to him ... READ is a 4 letter word)?

For my family, my goal is to build some pre-made characters (Fighter, Thief, Wizard, Cleric) and develop a quick guide for these level 1 players. The guide will get down to 'brass tacks' when it comes to combat mechanics, and have only the most essential information needed for game play. I truly want this to be something that any middle schooler could pick up and learn in under 15 minutes (preferably 5 minutes).

I'm developing the guide using Google docs, and would appreciate your comments.

(I can't post a link to it yet ... this is my first post)

I'm hoping that this might be a collaborative effort, and maybe the good folks at Troll Lords could benefit from this work.

TLG's working on a 'basic' boxed set that is primarily aimed at younger audiences. It may be out before sumer of 2008. ^_^

I knew that they were advertising a boxed set ... but I didn't know it was going to be geared towards younger players (I was afraid it was going to be the Quick Start Guide).

Is there any chance that they would like some younger players to review it?

If not, is there a possibility that I can assist them (either proof reading, or offering beginner questions from a 'new gamer' point of view)?

I wish I could post the link ... but I still have to make a few more posts before I can do that (min 5 post limit).

Thanks for the reply,

Daniel

Steve and I have been working on an adventure for just this kind of thing. Waiting for the artwork to come in - done by a Mr. Jim Holloway! I've seen a couple of the illustrations and they look top-notch! It's creeping forward ever so much...

Hey dmrey! I'm really glad you've joined the Crusade!

This product has really interested a number of us with kids too.

I've tried to offer my help three times over the last few months for this project, but I haven't ever heard a word back. I hope you have better luck.

You might want to fill out a Non-Disclosure Agreement for the Trolls found here:
http://www.trolllord.com/newsite/downloads/docs/NDA.doc

Someday soon, we may join our kids in "that Troll Game!" (Riley, age 5)
