Star Wars SKYPE game, any interest?

Post by Dyne »

Several months or so ago, I had created my own sort of "Star Wars RPG system" by tweaking the D20 and Saga Edition rules. To summarize: basically no classes, a simplified skill system, no AoO's, and you pick and choose special abilities to build your character (whether you want him to be a Jedi, soldier, pilot, scoundrel, etc., or some combination). I haven't tested it out much, but the encounters I ran with it seemed to go pretty quick, smooth, and fun.

So, after digging up my files on it, I was thinking on possibly getting a game together for it. Would there be anyone willing to get together for a Star Wars or Sci-fi-ish game over SKYPE? You would sortof have to learn a new ruleset, but if you are familiar with D20 or C&C, most of it should be very familiar. I think the main differences would be the skills, equipment, and special abilities, and maybe a few tidbits about combat.

If we did get a group together, we would probably begin play a month or two (or three) from now. Should give enough time to become familiar with the rules, and for me to come up with some adventures and plot.

I'm intyerested, but won't know for sure until I see your rules, and see how many games I am still involved in at the time you start. Like right now I would have to say no because I am involved in games 5 days out of 7. After RAvenloft is done I'll still be involved in 3 games a week.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I'll post up the rules when I can, but I still gotta tweak a few things. I haven't messed with them in months, so they could use a slight update.

I don't think the rules would be too complicated to learn, especially for someone that played 3E or D20 Star Wars. I typed them up in a word document, and these are the page counts for the different chapters:

1: Attributes (6 pages)

2: Species (8 pages)

3: Levels (4 pages)

4: Talents (13 pages)

5: Force Powers (6 pages)

I still need to type up Skills, Equipment, and Combat, so I'm estimating the grand total will come to around 50 pages. Almost all of it will be reference material, anyway.

Simplified the rules a bit more, and it now looks a lot like C&C. Except with lightsabers and laser guns. The talents system (which was basically like feats) just wasn't working out, so I ditched it.

Trying to post up some of it now; does anyone know of a site where I can host documents for free?

But anyway, here are the basics:

First, your character selects whether he wants to focus on combat or skills. This choice affects your to-hit bonus, hit points, and number of skills. Next, he picks a profession, which gives certain abilities and bonuses. Finally, you roll up your attribute scores, pick out your skills, and purchase your equipment. I suppose deciding which alien species you want to be would be somewhere in there as well.
Professions

Potentially anything that can be thought of, including Jedi, smugglers, pilots, diplomats, soldiers, etc.
6 Attributes:

Strength (same as C&C)

Dexterity (same as C&C)

Constitution (same as C&C)

Intelligence (affects skills, such as using computers or repairing starships)

Wisdom (affects Force powers, if you're a Jedi)

Charisma (same as C&C)
16 Skills: (and 3 Force skills)

Acrobatics (Dex)

Awareness (Wis)

Climb (Str)

Computer Use (Int)

Deception (Cha)

Endurance (Con)

Gather Information (Cha)

Knowledge (Int)

Mechanics (Int)

Persuasion (Cha)

Pilot (Dex)

Ride (Dex)

Stealth (Dex)

Survival (Wis)

Swim (Str)

Treat Injury (Wis)

Alter (Cha) (Force skill)

Control (Con) (Force skill)

Sense (Wis) (Force skill)

Are these skills, especially the Force skills, defined in the D20 SW (non SAGA) book? If so, are those the definitions your going to go with?

The skill list is from Saga, but it's basically the same as pre-Saga but some skills were combined.

Acrobatics = Balance, Jump, Tumble

Awareness = Listen, Spot, Search, etc.

Deception = Bluff, Disguise

Mechanics = Craft, Demolitions, Repair

Persuasion = Diplomacy, Intimidate

Stealth = Hide and Move Silently

The DC's and such will all be very similar (if not identical) to the SW D20 rules. However, the training system is very different; in my version, you pick a number of trained skills. If you're trained in a skill, you add your full level as a bonus; if you're untrained, you add half your level. There are also a few things you can only do if you're trained.

The system for Force powers, however, is very, very different. I have slowly crafted my system over years of house rules and tinkering. It only vaguely resembles the pre-Saga rules for the Force.

EDIT: Also, the starship rules are basically the same as pre-Saga d20, but simplified a bit.
