Talisman 4e

Post by Omote »

I just picked up the new Talisman boardgame, and it's pretty neat. The graphics, presentation, box, etc is all better and ramped up. For fans of the Talisman boardgame, essentially Talisman 4e is exactly what 2nd edition Talisman is, except with a few more rules (clearer), and all new looks.

I forgot what edition of Talisman I played was. It was so long ago. There was a city and space expansion set.

I ended up with Runebound last year trying to find something like Talisman. Should have waited. Talisman is way different.

Hi Omote. Can you elaborate on what the rules changes are from 2e to 4e. We still have a copy of the 2e game and all expansions except Dragons. My younger brother is nagging me to get 4e, but why buy the same game again just for the new art?

I have 4e, too, and 1e, 2e, 3e, and all the expansions... just a board game fanboy. Have not played the new ediiton, because I'm trying to get that damned promo card first.

The rules changes are minimal. for the most part is a fairly indepth explanation of how it's possible to pick up cards on a space, draw cards, cast spells, encounter the drawn card, all in the same turn. Essentially, in this version of the rules there are examples on the more confusing aspects on what you can do when there are lots of cards being played on one turn. This version clarifies it pretty well.

4e Talisman also clarifies how many spells you can cast on your turn, as well as on other player's turns.

Thanks for the info, Omote.

That might explain why the 4e rules aren't available as a pdf. If you already own 2e, all you really get in the new edition is new artwork and a few rules tweeks. In Australia the game costs about $80, so I'm reluctant to drop that much cash for what will essentially be the same play experience as the 2e version.

A buddy of mine picked me up a GenCon copy, so I've been playing it for a couple months now. It's a lot of fun. It's very random though, strategy will only take you so far.

One important errata. The Orb of Knowledge and the Prophetess take a card, then decide whether to draw a 2nd card. If they take the second card, they have to encounter it. The way it's written on the card sounds like the player looks at both cards at once then picks.

I saw a few copies on the shelves at my LGS -- reasonably priced (though I can't remember exactly what it was at).

I'll probably end up picking it up sooner or later but bills as usual come first!

Looks like fun... never played any of the previous editions mind you.

I agree.

The game is 2nd edition with rules clarifications. (No more going through the entire deck of spells on a single turn!)

The product is very high quality too. All the cards are a quite sturdy and glossy, plastic coins for gold, etc. I was amazed that they could do all that for $50 - if WotC did something like this it would cost $200!

I was very happy with it, playing it tomorrow.

Tis a fun game indeed. Had it since Gen Con but only got to play it twice so far.

I found myself looking at it today again when I was at my LGS and I have a few questions:

How long is you average game?

How easy is it to learn; does it have a high learning curve or is it something which is can easily dove into?

Can someone describe some of the better points/highlights of the game? I've figured that, in some ways it might be a bit like Hero Quest or Descent but looking how the game is set up, it looks to be also very different from those two games.

Thanks!

Games last about 2-3 hours in my experience. Setup is much much quicker than Descent, taking less than 5 minutes. Gameplay is also simpler, with limited character growth but easier to grasp rules and faster play. The only real complaint I have is that the gold becomes useless quickly in Talisman 4e. I will probably see if we can houserule that 5gp = a character powerup of the player's choice.

Learning curve is low.

One of the highlights is that it is a simple game to pick up and play. Don't have to go over a ton of rules, and the game is veru straight forward. Build up your character to advance towards the center of the board to defeat the hardest of challanges.

Talisman is not a deep board game by any stretch of the imagination. But it is quite fun. The newest version of the game is beautiful, with nice pieces and lots of good fantasy artwork.

While thematically it is a bit like Decent and Hero Quest, overall it is a different boardgame.
