Vampiric Ring

Post by ChaosImp »

Hello

Just a quick ethic/moral question about a Paladin using a ring of vampiric regeneration. Do you think the Paladin would lose his abilities for using one of these or would it be okay as the thing is not necessary evil? The reason I'm asking is that there is a slight chance that the group may find one in the next adventure so I like to be ready for the future debate. Personally I think that it could be considered a chaotic act but not an evil one.

It is not chaotic, but it is not good, either... to use the life of another to heal yourself. That is traditional evil.

I say let the paladan take the ring and if he uses it, make the life points start to "taint his soul." more like a dark side of the force thing. the more HP he gains could be used as a wis save modifier to see if his soul taints too much and then become evil.

I'm just thinking of why using the ring is evil? Take for instance a group of adventures planning on raiding an orc cave. They sneak into someones home and kill everyone. it doesn't sound to good to commit that act but for the Paladin to use the ring to overcome an opponent he would otherwise not be able to defeat may not necessarily be evil especially if that opponent is some sort of tyrant. I can see however the ring being used for an evil purpose (used in torture, or malicious intent), but just for combat only I can't see it being evil.

I would think that the answer is clear and obvious. A lawful good paladin stands for the highest of ideals. Sucking on someones life force for the paladins own benefit certainly doesn't even approach that realm of ethical.

A paladin of evil alignment I can see. But certainly not one of good. A LG paladin would be stripped of their power post haste, in my game, were they to continue to knowingly use such an item after certain divine prodding giving hints.

Not that any character should know, right away, what they have found. ^_~~

I'd say that is the "Best case".

I like that! "Father confessor, I don't understand. I've continued to follow all the tenants of my order. For some reason lately I've been having more & more nightmares....... Yesterday while I sat in meditation of the writings of Patear I had the most evil desire....."

Or, more subtle... "As your character goes along, he finds himself possessed of a true glow of energy, strength and power as he smites down evil all around. It must be a sign from (insert deity here) rewarding the paladin for his piety..."

Its a slippery slope...
