Just the way we are...

Post by slimykuotoan »

You know, I've had some huge life altering events happen to me over the past year or so, and have relocated and gone back to school as a result.

During this time, I've looked hard at reinventing myself, and so began to reconsider the things I that I've enjoyed over the years, to see if they were 'really me'.

Thusly, I set out to try new things, and -I'm ashamed to say- wanted to distance myself alittle from roleplaying, etc in an effort to 'grow up'.

Boy, was that a strange period.

I really like roleplaying.

And things aren't as they were years ago...so collecting, anime, rpgs, etc. are all perfectly acceptable for older guys.

I'm so glad I'm going with my instincts from now on.

Every now and then, a person needs a self-inventory, to see if they are doing what they really want, or if they're doing it just because they're doing it... its ok to decide to move on, and healthy, really. Of course, there's nothing unhealthy about roleplaying, anyway, unless you're a freak. ;)

The only time to ignore your instincts is when you KNOW they will get you in trouble.

So when your instincts are telling you to do something against the law, don't listen to them.

When they are telling you to tell your wife she looks fat in that dress, shut up.

By and large the "trick" is to do what makes you happy, unless it involves serial murder like Dexter on Showtime.

To the deep levels of Hades with what everyone else thinks. IF it makes you happy even your wife should be fine with it, if she really loves you more than she loves how others think about the two of you. Vice versa for female gamers.

If we just concentrate on making ourselves into people we can be happy with, who cares what others think about you? It all starts with ourselves, and we work from there.

So for me, my list of beig happy with myself is:

Be good to my wife.

Be good to my kids.

Be able to take care of them in the way I wish, IE make decent money.

Be there for my wife and kids, and anyone else I like if it doesn't interfere with my family.

Be a person of integrity, truth, and honor.

Deal only with others of similar aims.

Realize that others are very mixed up and try not to hold it against them.

Teach my kids to have good self esteem and to get educated enough to have a good life for themselves and their future families.

Thats most of what I demand of myself, and I do a pretty good job of accomplishing it. However it did take me a lot of years to get to a point where I could be happy with myself, and I still make mistakes and have moments of weakness, but I know I am "getting there".

Just don't give up. It will happen, eventually.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

I've always been bent. I like being bent, it suits me.

When rpgs become more exciting than my life, I take some time off from them. Otherwise, I end up taking a break from the really important stuff in life - and that ends up hurting me and those I love.
