Gary Gygax and Mongoose?

Post by CharlieRock »

I was going over some older issues of Dragon when I caught an ad for MGP Slayer's Guide to Dragons. More then that it was the writing credit listed Gary Gygax (and only GG). Anyone seen this book? This is the first I heard of it (don't know where I was when it came out, probably shovelling sand over my head.)

It came out a few years ago as part of their d20 Slayer's Guide line. I think it had a mini-adventure in it too. He also had one that focused on Undead - that one may have been co-written.

They're both pretty good, as far as those sorts of things go... much better than the Slayer's Guide to Female Gamers of the Slayer's Guide to Rules Lawyers (and yes, both of those exist.)

Yeah, its like 12 or 16 pages. But, they say its not the length, but the breadth and depth of the insertion and immersion, as it were. I came out, knowing more than I ever wanted to think I needed to try and know.

Ayup. In short it can be summed up with...

"Want to meet one of these rare creatures. Visit water more often than being rained on."

The book on dragons is quite nice, full of ecology details and "tweakings" on 3.x dragons. Not sure how much will work with C&C, though.

Oh, I was just wondering if it had nice fluff-stuff on Dragons (and specifically Gygax's version of their origins.)

A big speedbump for me bringing in D&D3 stuff is when the monsters have classes (dang near mandatory for some monsters there). After I'm done those things are big huge piles of XP with all those astericks and special abilities.

Make a goblin rogue/sorceror and turn it over to C&C and watch it poof with disproportianate xp.

My recollection was that it was relatively rules-light, aside from some rather vicious new dragons.

There was a lot of draconic strategy advice, much of it pretty darn crafty and effective, to the chagrin of PCs everywhere.

Yes, there is lot of fluff. But the mechanical parts are not so easy to adapt to C&C (I tried).

Merry Yuletide to All!

Those rotters at Mongoose failed to list my co-author, the Redoubtable Jon Creffield, a fine fellow and superior designer. Jon co-authored both of the guides I did for Mongoose, and he should be given at least equal credit.

Christmas best wishes,

Gary

The Slayers guides did get a bit out of control, although there were some good ones... most were passable at best though.

Thanks!

I have to pass along my good wishes at this time of year on boards and through emails as we never manage to organize and send out Christmas cards
Yuletide cheer,

Gary
