Wildest Familar or NPC

Post by Puckk »

My husband and I were talking at lunch about the game he's working on. I told him that for my gnome wizard I wanted an Elven dog as a familiar. He told me if I did it would beable to speak... like Caesar Malan (for those of you that don't know or have cable. The Dog whisperer. )

"Get to the front and assert your dominance. You must be a calm assertive party leader. Cast those spells with calm positive energy."

What was the wildest NPC or Familiar you had in a game?

I'll Let Montague talk about Ert the goblin

Grimey the Gremlin. Wasn't a familiar, but took a liking to a fighter in a game one time and followed the party around claiming to be the fighter's familiar.

Made life miserable for them. They wanted to kill the little bugger several times, but he turn all weepy and grovelling on them and they'd spare him every time.

Suckers.

I once had a gelatinous cube that was inhabited by brain leeches. I think that sums it up nicely.

Jumping Jiminy! Two C&C adventuring parties with Gnomes and Cooshies!

Now, what are the odds of that?

In one wild Dr. Who campaign (in which I played a 400lb 17th-century Puritan), one of the PC's was Mitch the Flying Monkey. Mitch was a womanizing, alcoholic simian whose bellhop uniform was always quite disheveled, and he'd say the foulest of things.

After that campaign ended, Mitch would make cameo NPC appearances in any matter of genres - Pretty much anywhere the GM could justify inserting a drunken, flying monkey. The group even had me make Mitch t-shirts for them.

Good times.

My nephew's elf druid received an owl baby familiar from the Great Owl in The Wizening Branch for services rendered. The fledgling will grow and I'm thinking to have some fun with the little fellow - soon to be HUGE and his druid master - like some of those silly movies with the giant dog who's out of control and his master can't control him!!!
Yeah, I think I will do it!

Oh yes, Ert the Goblin.

I was running The Goblin Caves for a group and in one of the rooms the party had slain all but one of the goblins and its turn came up I did a morale check. He failed miserably and cowered in the corner. One of the players (who played a gnome, coincidentally) had the wits to not kill the goblin and captured him instead. The gnome interrogated him and wanted to know all sorts of details about him so I did some quick secret rolls. Turns out that even with penalties the goblin was quite intelligent and his name was Ert.

Instead of threatening Ert within an inch of his life, the gnome offered him gold for information about the Goblin caves. Ert quickly realized that this was a pretty good gig, and the gnome took a shine to Ert and his greedy ways and the two became fast friends.

So by the end of the adventure, Ert had landed for himself a pile of gold, a brand new hut outside of town, a 33 1/3% interest in the gnome's to-be constructed alchemy shop, and four female goblins of his choice from the dead Goblin King's harem.

Unfortunately for Ert, during the next adventure his patron met a bitter end when Puckk's character rolled a critical fumble whilst tossing a gem from her Necklace of Fireballs, which landed at the foot of a certain gnome who was carrying a small keg of high-proof liquor on his back, several flasks of Alchemist's fire, and a keg of black powder.

An elven ranger in an old 1e to 2e campaign had a Berber (or was it Burbur?) follower. As I recall, it was essentially a 2' long caterpillar thingie.

Try getting saddled with an orc. My player character elven ranger was once given a divine (and unwanted) assist by the gnome deity Carl Glittergold who thought it would be funny to have an elf have an orc follower. The only problem was, my character had to protect this orc from harm, which turned out to be very difficult (noone liked orcs in our adventuring areas). The DM had loads of fun with this one, especially when the orc accompanied my elf back home.

One of my Players has a half-elf with an al-mir'raj as familiar; there was an OOG joke for the reason, but the thing's been a part of the game for so long now, the humour's been eclipsed and the bunny's part and parcel of the character's presentation.

My wife's first, favourite, and longest-lasting PC is a gnome fighter with a blink dog companion (it was a mutual rescue/escape thing way back when) and a giant goat for a steed.

Other than that, the rest of them aren't much for animal companions or familiars

I like to use Faerie Dragons, Pseudo dragons, pixies, and intelligent items. Only in small groups of 4 or 5. Too much to keep track of with bigger groups.

My current Monday Group has Griffons and flying carpets. They seem to be enjoying those a good bit, but none of them are role played.

One of the things I enjoyed as a player was an intelligent Shadow staff that my Thief came into possession of. The DM had the darn thing talk out loud every so often when I was sneaking around. Eventually I was able to teach it the value of silence.
