The Wonders of the State

Post by DangerDwarf »

I've been in training this week. Every year we have to attend training which covers various policies, etc. Part of that training is qualifying on the firing range with a .357 and AR-15.

The state, to save money, uses reloads for ammunition we shoot to qualify. An understandable practice, right? I think so.

Well, the batch of ammunition sent up to our region was crummy. The machine didn't put enough powder into the rounds, nor did it oil them. The result? A lot of weak shots that would jam in the barrel.

Did the Operational Division send us new rounds though? Nope. That would be a waste of money. So, the answer to the problem?

Spray the barrels of the weapons with Pam Cooking Spray. Actually, let me take that back, Pam is too expensive.

Spray the barrels with Great Value Cooking Spray.

It worked, only one .357 jammed, but still...thats just crazy.

This is a multi-million dollar agency, one of the largest correctional agencies in the world, and we had to rely on GV cooking spray to keep our weapons operational.

I love this job.

Nothing but the best for those who protect us and help keep us safe!

I had a friend who is a police office at the local University. He said that his department frowns on him having his own Ar-15 in the trunk of his cruiser. He told me, "John, when some idiot kidnaps your kid's class at school, you will want me to have that weapon." He's right.

Your, right. What a country.

Heh. That is amazing.

When cooking, I like to through a splash of cheap bourbon (the good stuff is most definitely NOT for cooking) in the skillet. Maybe a splash in the barrel will also help?

I sooooo want my own personal AR-15 but thus far I have been unable to convince my wife to let me spend that much on a weapon.

Now, if you want a good way to clean the weapon after use, Alkiseltzer and hot water. You'd be astonished how clean a weapon is after said use.

I've actually heard someone talking about that before. Never tried it though.

We discovered it at a civil war reenactment at Gettysburg back in 1988.

Makes those black powder weapons chrome for sure. Just imagine what its doing to the stomach lining.

Gideon,

Just curious, are you a member of the GAF. I used to do Civil War reenactments myself. I still shoot black powder with SASS. I have never heard of the Alkiseltzer and hot water trick, I will have to try it. Do you know if it will dull the blueing?

Thanks.

Your starting to make me think your first name is Doug and your last name is the same as Homers.

Which would be awesome if your the one your making me think of.

But he did re enactments when we lived in Charleston and even got to "escort" the soldiers body moved from the Citadel to their new grave site and also was able to be involved, I think, in some ceremony when the sub was moved, or officially opened to the public, or something like that.

No. I'm not a member of either group. I've just been doing historical reenacting for over 30 years now. I've participated in every sort of event from renaissance faires to WWII skirmishing, to war games with the national guard among a wide array of activities.

My folks run a business called Uniforms of Antiquity which provides clothing for all those eras for both reenactments and film.

I don't think that the Alikiseltzer will have any effect on the blueing. But the trick is to break up the tablets and put them down the barrel of whatever weapon your attempting to clean, and then pour hot water within. For muskets and similar weapons one just has to hold their thumb over one end.

We really haven't experimented with this trick for more modern weapons. Mainly because we don't own anything manufactured past WWII. Although, one can disassemble any weapon and immerse it in an Alkiseltzer bath as it were. Works well enough and just takes a bit of polishing afterwards.

One can use Coke Cola as well, although the results tend to be a lot more sticky than using cold meds.

seeing how awesomely Coke cleans brass and steel is what made me quit drinking it.

I am NOT putting that in my stomach. I have to wonder why Pepsi doesn't work as well since the ingredients, that are acidic, aren't that different.

Orange Kool Aid is pretty awesome too.

You should also be able to use hydrogen peroxide for cleaning.

When I was in the Army, we used to use Coke to clean all kinds of things. Orange Kool-Aid works real good as a stove, oven, and pots & pans cleanser as well.

I don't own a AR-15 and my wife would never allow the expenditure for one, but I can get my hands on 2 or 3 in a pinch. Plus all the AKs and SKs and the 50 Cal.

I love have a gun nut for a close friend. All the fun, non of the exspence.

Heh.. one of the only guns I've ever wanted to own was a long barreled hawkin musket, the other is the rifle from Quigley Down Under.

I know, I'm strange. Don't really care much for modern guns, no style. And as Obi Wan was want to note "so uncivilized'.

*chuckles* I'm something of an antiquarian. Most folks who come over to our place thank us for the tour of 'the museum'.

I can understand that.

Another dream gun would be a double barrel. This one is a beauty, but at 5 grand, a pipe dream for me.
