Any experience with AD&D Age of Heroes...

Or AD&D Charlemagne's Paladins?

I've found where I can pick them up online as PDFs and was wondering if they're any good.

I found Age of Heroes an excellent resource to run a very myth oriented quasi-greek campaign in the mid 90s. Are you planning a historical campaign or something just loosely based?

I'm looking to start some "historical fiction" that leans more toward realism. I'm thinking that I'd like to run the game with C&C so was wondering if these books would help.

Generally, the greenback 2e HR books are worthwhile. They might not be "real history," but they are simple, to the point, and provide just enough to not handhold or make you limp with trouble.

I tend to go for a more historic & lower magic world so use all the green books. The only one I'm not a huge fan of is "The Mighty fortress" It isn't bad just not that good at swashbuckler playing.

The historic books for pendragon are good too.

Please tell me a bit more about how magic is handled in Charlemagne's Paladins?

Also another quick question. Anyone tried this with C&C?

Ugh, can I state just how much I hate the Le Morte D'Arthur-style Arthurian template. Might I suggest for a more historically based campaign, a good resource (oddly enough) is the Vortigern Studies web resource page. Sure, its not a game site, but it does have lots of interesting essays and the like as well as links to other Arthurian resources.

Give me an Arthur with a Chi-Rho symbol on his shield, lancea, spatha, Intercisa-type helmet and a dagged pattern mail corselet like this chap any day over the High Medieval drek that mostly passes as 'Arthurian'. I want Saxon Foederati and Sarmatian-descended cataphractoi. Myrddin the Druid and Constatine the Usurper.

I don't really despise the Le Morte D'Arthur style but I was really looking at it for the magic system.

And thanks for the link. It looks very, very good.

Only played with the Viking Sourcebook. Was quite fun, and made a memorable short campaign to be sure.

The Viking's book was the best one imo, and i still use it. It was the only one of the series that had new classes. It works with C&C as well as any 2nd Ed book. Which is to say, almost seamlessly.

Age of Heroes and Charlemagnes Paladins both definitely have some useful stuff in them too. I wouldn't expect you have any problems implementing them with C&C.
