Anyone here play the Reaper miniature skirmish game Warlord?

My wife and I have been considering getting into this but would like to hear the opinions of some others who have picked it up and played it.

I have a demo of it being run in my store tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think.

I have the boxed set that came with the hardcover rulebook and a bunch of skeletons and I believe knights. I have never played it.

That being said....

The rules seemed like they would work very well. Pretty easy to grasp and seem like they would flow smoothly. Basic attacks are a d10 add stat and beat defense. Simple rules on unit cohesion and such.

I just really don't have the time to paint, and so I have never used it.

The world setting is pretty interesting, and they definitely have some awesome factions. And there is enough factions to cover all types of play and personalities.

If your into painting, I would say its definitely worth a look into. A good substitute for Warhammer. It's buy in cost is less than Warhammer(especially with some smart shopping). And IMHO a lot easier to grasp the rules quickly, which is not to say they don't play just as well when it comes to strategy.

Cool, thanks for the input. You answered a question I had about the starter set too. I does come with the hardback rules book.

I wouldn't call it a replacement for Warhammer, more like a replacement for Mordheim, since Warlord is a skirmish game and Warhammer features multi-miniature units moving in formation.

I've played a few times, but I have friends who are a lot more into it, or were, since apparently Reaper began introducing core rules changes within the army books, which didn't sit well with them. I don't know details, but it has made we wary.

I unfortunately didn't get a chance to play in the demo 'cause we were busy at the store and I had to attend a lot of customers. But I didn't have some time to watch the game play and got the feedback from those who got the demo. It's an easy game to learn, fast and fun to play. Only the core game mechanics are still viable in the hardcover rulebook. Rules changes have been made to the power and spell details, and stat cards, for balance reasons. The changes are given as a free download from the Reaper website.

It seems to be a really good fantasy medieval skirmish-style paintable miniatures game. It's definitely worth a look. I'll be bringing in the Crusaders and Necropolis starters to paint up as demo armies for the store.

I think I will end up picking this up after pay day. Sounds pretty good and I found the updated PDF of the battle cards (thanks Dristram).

Now we just need to decide what factions we want to be and start looking them up.

Speaking of miniatures skirmish rules. Check out my newest addiction. We play it before games of C&C because it is rules-lite and extremely addictive. Just right for us old schoolers who have come to C&C for a respite from the bog that is most RPGs of today.

Not to mention you can dust off those old minis in your closet because the system uses almost any minis you own.

In the hardback Warlord book, how much fluff is there regarding the setting and the various factions? Is there enough to give you something to work from for those of us who might want to build up on that? I know they have faction books for some of the factions but neither faction my wife or I want to play have those books and we are curious about how much info we'd find in the main book.

The first 30 pages are setting/faction descriptions of all the factions. A lot of it told through a short story.

pages 80-112 are Army rosters and faction specific abilities.

So yes after reading the HC MB you should understand all of the factions pretty well. And from reading only, it seems like you should be able to play any faction you want with the MB only. Assuming your not planning on tournament play, and are just playing for fun at home or what not.

The rosters seem to cover a lot of minis, I don't know how much has been made beyond whats in the MB.

Hope this helps

I noticed in the terrain thread you said you and your wife had picked factions.

Which ones did you go for?

I'm going with the dwarves (of course) and my wife picked Reptus. They should be here by my next days off and we'll get to painting then. The painting and the getting the terrain and board like I want should give us ample time to familiarize ourselves with the rules before we get going.

Reaper is an excellent company run by very cool folks. I plan on giving this game a try when I get a chance and suspect I will like it very much.

Yeah, this is a game I've been wanting to try for awhile now. Looking forward to finally getting a chance to give it a whirl soon.
