Shovelling snow with Johnny Cash

Post by Deogolf »

As I was shovelling snow early this morning, then late morning, and then again in the early afternoon, this song was going through my head over & over.

Actually the song is Five Feet High and Rising, but for me it was, "How high's the snow, Mama?" - five inches and rising. Then, later,

"How high's the snow, Mama?" - eight inches and rising.

It is now mid-afternoon and the snow keeps coming...gaaah!!

"How high's the snow, Mama?" Twelve inches and rising...

Yeah tell me about it...I've given up till the storm is gone before I shovel again. Not sure how much has fallen but I assume it'll be a foot and thus this winter will have been a record for snow fall.

"How high's the snow, Mama?" - 12-15" and rising.
But, judging by the radar, it should be over soon. Thank, Odin!!

I've...had...enough...(thud)...

Yeah..I'm feeling it now. Should be sore tomorrow.

Heard one place got like 19 inches, but am sure that figure will rise.

Haha, Deogolf is having fun!!!

Actually, he's probably passed out about now.

Old man winter is giving us a serious ass kicking lately. Making up for mild wimpy winters in year's past.

We had 19" last week, but today only 4", so it was a cake walk shoveling snow tonight.

Hmm, I'm still thinking about the relative mild weather for the Winter Dark CON and then when it was over ~ all winter hell broke loose here!

Well ended up with 13.3 inches, most I've seen in a day for a long time. Just glad the plowed barricade at the end of the driveway wasn't rock hard snow. Now bring on some 80 degree temps, please. Groundhog here predicted an early Spring

Having fun? Heh! (I did have a couple of beers afterwards to celebrate!)
Yes, we are making up for the easy seasons of late. The back half of my driveway to the garage is still cover by 9-12" of snow. Will probably tackle it some time over the weekend.

The way I look at it, the groundhog is doomed! Either he's wrong about having an early Spring or he's dead because of the "six more weeks of winter". I wonder if there is a good recipe out there somewhere? I'll ask Steve, those southerners will cook just about anything!!

There is about 2" here in Buffalo. Weak weather. Maybe there will be more when I go to the Adirondacks Friday night.

I am sorry to hear about you all getting dumped on by the snow. It has been pretty warm and dry here in southern New Mexico. It is supposed to get up to 60 today.

May be you all should move out here.
Not that I'm rubbing it in, I just want more folks to game with.

We had temperatures at 10 over the record yesterday here in the Delaware Valley. It was 70 out when I left work yesterday. 46 today.

I pray all of your backs hold up because I don't miss the snow we had last year.

BTW, I love Johnny Cash. I played Unearthed IV in the hospital when my wife was on her way out of this world. My 5 year old son loves "Ring of Fire" and "I Walk the Line".

I am a little sore, but not as bad as I thought I'd be. I guess I'm more tired than anything else.

Even with all the snow I like where I am - wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

I think as long as you're happy where you are there's no reason to move. As much as I despise the corruption and idiotic politics in NJ, I love the people here in the Delaware Valley.

As for the Man in Black, I agree.

Did someone mention Ring of Fire? That's not a song I want to hear.. it'll get stuck in me brain and then I'll be singing it for days... and then, I'll get smacked.

Why did you have to mention it? WHY?!

It is too late. It has begun....

Johnny Cash is the man. I've been listening to his western ballads for awhile now. Great songs like Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie and I Ride an Old Paint. I got the kids singing em too, we drive to school in the morning and listen to the songs. My kids love Ride an Old Paint, its something to hear a bunch of little ones singing from the back of the truck

"When I die,

take my saddle from the wall,

put it on my pony

Take em out of the stall.

Take my bones

Place em on his back

Turn are faces to the west

and we'll ride the prairie we love the best . . ."

And then the wife getting killed in a pool room fight,

25 minutes to go--about a dude getting hung

haha All great fun in the Chenault house. And of course my kids are going to be messed up!

I've now begun listen to some old dirty country in the guise of wonderful sad Merle Haggard!

I met Merle once, with Buck Owens, when I still lived out in California. This was right after Buck had opened up The Crystal Palace in Bakersfield (where I lived at the time.) Had a weird talk with him, but I tend to have weird talks with lots of people... maybe its me?

I always liked Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" and "One Piece at a Time" also, but "Ring of Fire" is excellent.

"Ring of Fire" is the last song they play each night at the Safe House. At least it was back when I lived in Beerwaukee.
Sorry to hear about the snow, John. It's retribution for all of my friends who told me, "See? You left and it's not even cold or snowy anymore.". This winter's making them eat their words.

Gonna be up near 80 in San An-tone (I hear the train a-comin') today.

Just picked up "Dwight Sings Buck", which of course, is Dwight Yoakam singing Buck Owens' tunes. Pretty cool.

As for the Man in Black, Steve, I would put on a Johnny Cash DVD (I own 3 of them) before my son would go to bed each night from the time he was 2 until 4 when his mom got really sick. Anyway, we sing the songs I mentioned above but when my wife's health declined nothing soothes the soul like "Daddy Sang Bass", "The Old Rugged Cross", and (the tear-jerker) "In the Garden". My wife's favorite was his rendition of "Do Lord". Good stuff, if a bit hard to bear at times. Nothing like getting the "Old Yeller lump" in your throat listening to music. I would have to say the remix version of "I Am A Pilgrim" and "The Wanderer" with U2 are my favorites. You can't go wrong no matter what you pick when it comes to Johnny Cash. One of his quotes is something I hold dear every day:

"If I'm ever accused of being a Christian, I hope there'll be enough evidence to convict me."

I haven't been to the Safehouse in a looong time - has to be at least 15 years or so. It's really neat place to see (and drink beer). Just don't get lost! (and don't forget the secret phrase!)
Just too many good songs to list. Was listening to his concert CD at Folsum Prison just the other day. Probably why that song popped into my head while I was shovelling! Time for another listen!!

First concert I ever saw in my whole life was Buck Owens at the Coliseum in Memphis. Never have met him. I've met very few country legends, which is weird, considering the large number of famous rockers I've met.
