Late Night Phone Calls Are Never Good

Post by serleran »

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but tonight I've had no choice. My grandfather-to-be is being taken off life support on Friday following a stroke that left him partially paralyzed and unable to speak. My fiance, who's grandfather it is, was not at home when the call came (she works later nights than I do at times when she's restoring a car for resell at auction), so I had to tell it to her... not something I have ever enjoyed, or desired. So, forgive me if I am not around much the next few days, especially the weekend, or if I leave certain things unattended: there are matters I must conclude.

For what its worth, he lived an incredible life to age 98, having recently had his birthday (I was lucky enough to have attended the event last month), and survived things I would only hope to not know (he was a PoW in WWII Japan). I have few words for a man I barely knew, but he has had a profound impact on my life - without him, I would not have my yum.

So, do not pray for him, or me - he knew his God well. Do not speak words of encouragement or sorrow unless you feel you must. Instead, please look at your family, hug them, and be glad. I simply wanted to say something, to share. Please think nothing ill of me.

Sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers to you and your fiancee.

I have drawn so very much in the way of knowledge and wisdom from my elders since I figured out that they are full of that and more.

They are to be cherished and celebrated even as they pass.

Rest In Peace.

Thoughts and prayers for you, your fiancee' and her family.

And as Rhu said, cherish and listen to your elders. They are a fountain of rare and wonderful knowledge.

My grandfather willfully passed in October of 06. Willfully meaning he refused to be kept alive when he had a heart attack.

He too was an amazing man and I deeply wish he were still here.

So don't feel bad about needing to talk about such important things.

Well, there is hope. Apparently, there was motion in him so the doctors are not declaring him brain dead (seems it went from partial paralysis to complete paralysis and the need for life support shortly after so he could breathe,) and maybe, just maybe, there will be a better outcome. We shall see if miracles still happen.

Miracles do happen, just too often its referred to as luck. So keep hoping and keep praying, it can happen.

Yup. You've had my prayers since yesterday too, buddy.

(My kids are tired of seeing me - they keep asking me, "when are you going to be gone for the night" or "isn't it time for us to have a babysitter?")

My wifes uncle is in a similar situation, so I have a good idea what you are going through. My thoughts and prayers to you and your fiance.

Same here, Serleran. I didn't post, but I've kept you and yours in prayer.

Serleran,

I don't know what else to add, but stay strong and be there your fiance. I've heard/read it somewhere that all things that happen to us are for our experience, and for our benefit. Even the bad things and times.

The challenge is knowing/learning how to apply these times and situations for our good.

I wish you and your loved ones well; praying for the best for you all.
