Wow, a third one. I didn't even realize there was a second. Lucky me.

I did not even know there has been a ST 2!!
Seems a nice film, although I wonder if we will ever see a ST which is close to Heinlein's book (which was quite grittier and without the silliness of the film).

Skip the second one (unless you like weird monsters and naked women). But mostly the 2nd one is terrible. The 3rd installment looks fantastic (for a direct to DVD movie that is)
Plus, it's got Jolene Blalock... and that is always a plus.

Well, I guess it could have been worse...naked monsters and weird women

man, I hated the first Starship Troopers. Where were the suits? the tac nukes?

About the best I'll give the new trailer is that it looks very campy, which might save it a bit.

I was completely creeped out by Starship Troopers, the first movie. I've since read that many folks went in with expectations formed by what they'd read on the internet, but I was not on the 'net when STroopers came out.

It simply creeped me out, especially when the audience stood and cheered.

That said, is it just me? or in this preview does the guy playing Rico, in the non-action shots, look like he's being propped up and doped to the gills on something?

Wasn't the first film campy enough? There is nothing to take literally in Starship Troopers. No deeper means, and certainly not the Heinlein classic novel. But the original Starship troopers movie, in my estimation was super fun to watch.

And Harry Joy you are right... some looks off about Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico) in those shots.

hmm... while I agree that the first one was campy, I guess my expectations were higher. I don't mind camp, mind you, but I didn't like that film. I was hoping for more of Heinlein's vision (of creepy fascist futures, of Mobile Infantry as one-man-armies, etc). By now, when I realize the franchise should better be termed "The poor man's Aliens (without actors)" or "Generic Western In Space" than "Starship Troopers" , I am less bothered ...

The second movie (Roughnecks) went straight to DVD release, and it sucked.

I read an article way back when that basically said the CGI guys couldn't afford to do good jobs on both the armor and the bugs, so they chose to do the bugs and just skip the suits.

Geleg,

They had tactical nukes in the first movie BTW. Those were the RPG looking things they were firing from the shoulder launchers.

I really liked the first movie. Though I try not to compare it to Heinlein's novel.

Second I couldn't get thru 5 minutes of it.

This one looks closer to the first movie, so I might enjoy it.

I never expect movies to stand up to the books. They are entirely different formats of presentation, for one thing. Plus movies have serious time constraints, so cannot present the same amount of "story" as a book can.

So when I see a movie adaptation of a book I "know" its not going to be as good as the book was.

So I liked Starship Troopers, the movie. I loved the book. I personally thought the second movie sucked, period. I might give this one a try though.

I'll probably get ousted for saying this, but I liked the Starship Troopers movie much more then the original book. Had lots more fun watching the film. The novel... meh... at best.

ST is one of the few Heinlein books that I've got but haven't read. Gotta get to it one of these days.

But the trailer looked pretty good - campy can be OK to a degree. I didn't see any of the movies, but I should have another look at my local library for some good free rentals.

@ Alwyn. My bad, I guess. I only barely remember the first film. I still maintain that the film still doesn't try very hard to replicate the very cool Mobile Infantry of the book, however (with one trooper capable of pacifying whole city blocks by himself). I think of the film and the 'circle the wagons' scene when the CGI bugs pour into the perimeter and the many marines let loose incredible amounts of machinegun (or is it laser?) fire and I don't see much in the way of similarity with Heinlein's concept.

@Treebore. I understand that films cannot be slavish to books. Most books can have multiple plot lines and complexities that are impossible to recreate in film. But, IMHO, the kinds of things that bothered me most about the ST film were not story related at all; rather, they were setting related. And that does puzzle me, since it would be relatively easy to replicate the books' vision of the Mobile Infantry.

I'm not one to decry a good space shoot 'em up - anyone remember that short-lived TV show from the early 90s about space marines/soldiers? (I can't remember the name, but I remember they used Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire in the pilot as the troopers jumped into hostile zones). Not a good show, by any stretch of the imagination - but I enjoyed it for what it was. My beef with the ST film was that it lays claim to the ideas and concepts of the book but doesn't deliver. If they had called it "Star Warriors Kick some Bug Ass", I would have no problems whatsoever. By calling it Starship Troopers, however, I expect some degree of fidelity to the overall premises of the franchise. And, again IMO, the film didn't deliver.

But ya know? Who cares? I'm sure there are plenty of films that I liked that others didn't. To each their own, sez I!
