If that's the case, then I'm definately pushing hard for Buffalo. It's right handy to the border for the Canadians, there's several large-ish cities within a couple/three hours drive, and plenty of other things in the area to see (Niagra Falls, Lake Erie, etc).

Buffalo is off the beaten path a bit.

Canada is right out. Sorry my goodly neighbors, but we went to Canada two years...or three years...ago and the customs fees to get our product took almost every bit of our profit.

Not a good scenario.

Here's a question: What time of year were people thinking? Sometime in the Fall (late September / early October)?

DEXCON 11 is being held in East Brunswick NJ... I've yet to attend their cons but I would assume their venue is used to RPG's at their hotel.

July 16 - 20, 2008

The East Brunswick Hilton

East Brunswick, New Jersey

It's just off the Jersey Turnpike but definitely closer to NYC then Phili.

I'm not saying it should be in October... I'm just wondering when people where aiming for. September *might* be a good month but August is out due to a tiny little con in Indianapolis. To be honest, I just don't know when most of the Cons are simply because I usually can't go to them.

The reason I ask is that the 'when' might help determine the 'where'.

The game convention mecca these days happens to be in the Ohio-Indiana area these days. One reason is because of it's central location to much of the gaming country.

Dragoncon is another worthy big con, but that might be too far south.

Albany seems like I limited area to garner any significant audience. Personally I wouldn't mind, but how many gamers are going to travel out of state to go to Albany?

Atlanta too far South? Why it's only twenty miles south for me. Just out of curiousity, why do there seem to bee so many gamers in the Midwest?

Gary Gygax was asked a similar question on his Q&A boards on Dragonsfoot. It sure seems there are a lot more gamers in the mid-West than in other regions of the US.

I wish there were more of a presence here in the East. It's mostly card games and miniature games (Clix, etc.) here.

OMG! A Trollcon in my backyard! This is awesome. Me and the two oldest kids will definitely be in attendance.

Of the cons I've been to in this area, most were held on college campuses; not sure how that works. The only non-campus con was in Cherry Hill - must have been Gen Con East I at the Cherry Hill Inn. Seemed ok to me, but that was 27 years ago.
Oh - and despite the ease it would present for me, I would also advise avoiding downtown Philly.

Are there any suburbs on your side of Philly that you would suggest, Stuie? Something like Norristown or King of Prussia (I know KoP has quite a few hotels off the PA Turnpike, as my sister's graduation from Immaculata U. was held at one of them)?

I live in NYC and I would suggest NJ for all the reasons noted, 3 airports nearby, cheaper than manhattan, centrally located state in a cluster of many others.

If you were going to do Eastern PA I would suggest the Scranton Area. Large enough but no where as large as Philli.

Do NOT go inside a major city. Look for a city/town nearby and still on a main interstate that also goes into the main city.

I could not agree more. There is no reason to hold a convention downtown Philly.

Convention ideas

Post by Hawkwinter »

I realize its not the "East Coast", as thats where I'm originally from...I would recommend Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. Currently, we are holding MavenCon with an attendence averaging 150 people for 2 days. We are using a small part of the convention space available within the hotel we have contracted with, The Marriott East (Not the one downtown that GenCon uses). They have expanded their convention services, and have a wonderful facility for handling convention groups in the hotel, with a number of lower price range hotels nearby. In addition, they are already skilled at Gaming conventions as ours and StarBase Indy have been held here in the past.

The local airport is very accessible and not a crowded hub, and is expanding this year so even more flights will be available here.

There are also numerous choices for hotle based convention centers around the town, that keep you out of the downtown area, but offer easy access to it. The Sheraton North is a good con hotel, as well as the Marriott Complex up north.

It is centrally located and very easy to get to from many major cities.

Just a thought.

King of Prussia has a few convention center type locations; Fort Washington used to but I think the major one closed. There might be some good spots in Plymouth Meeting as well.

Allentown might be a cheaper alternative than suburban Philly, but I'm not as familiar with stuff in that area.
