Troll Con East (Serleran this is yours! ha)

Okay folks,
We've cut out a two conventions for 2008 and I need to look to the coasts. How about a convention in the Atlantic States? I'm thinking New Jersey. I absolutely love New Jersey and have good connections there. Of course I've not been out east (sober) in years.
Other suggestions? And don't make them near you because you don't want to drive but centrally located with good facilities or atmosphere.

Well, if its gonna be in New Jersey, you'll need to find someone who knows that state. I've been there one time, driving through it. I still think mid-New York would be best, so the upper Canadians can get there without too much hassle... but, again, I don't know that area either. Heck, I'd love it in Buffalo (hehe) but that's not gonna happen, I bet.
I guess what we need are some suggestions for location....

For TLG Jersey has the advantage of having immediate retailer support. This is helpful for organizing and the like.
But perhaps Albany would be more centrally located.
Kerry brings up another good point. It has to be where there are no plethora of cons.

I could probably (maybe - not saying I could for sure) get Paul (Crazy Egor) to come, if anyone was interested. Would depend on placement, and time, of course. And, since I've not spoken to him about this... totally unsure if its a reality that might exist.

Crazy Egor rocks. Does he still have a brick and mortar.

As a Canuck, I definitely would favor New York State... Vermont State might be cool too. New Jersey is only a bit further but probably still manageable by car (ROAD TRIP!).
Alas, I know little south of the Canada/US Border so I can't offer up any suggestions.

I'm in NYC... depending on timing / location (NJ or lower NY) I'd be more then happy to volunteer to assist.

Yes, though its much smaller these days than it used to be (he had some back problems and decided to move the store to a location closer to where he lives to make things easier on him; its now in Hilton - the game store Millennium is on the spot his old store was; this store is actually down the road from my to-be parent-in-laws place so I see it every weekend) and I go in there about once every 2-6 weeks, if I can (and depending on available funds.) Great guy (if you actually speak to him, not one of the couple "helpers" who go along with him to the big cons.)

Are there any conventions with a Troll Lord presence out here in the Wild West? Maybe in the Pacific Northwest? It seems like all/most the TLG action is east of the Mississippi.

KublaCon (San Francisco) had a nice Troll presence, as did GAMA (Las Vegas) at one point, though I never did see them at either when I was still out in that neck of the woods (not their fault, though, I was just too cheap to have money.) After that, I don't know about any cons north of California. Probably the best area for a "Troll Con West" would be a place like Denver... its pretty central and everything runs through there.

The game convention mecca these days happens to be in the Ohio-Indiana area these days. One reason is because of it's central location to much of the gaming country.
Dragoncon is another worthy big con, but that might be too far south.
Albany seems like I limited area to garner any significant audience. Personally I wouldn't mind, but how many gamers are going to travel out of state to go to Albany?

No idea, and I must say, its not really my preference either. But, when TCE was initially being discussed, Albany popped up as the most likely contender, so its sort of stuck, I guess. I'm definitely not set on it being there.

Personally (and I am biased) I would suggest something within 50-70 miles of NYC... gives any flying in at least 3 airports to choose from but hopefully far enough from the city that the trolls can get a decent location at a reasonable price.
I've been to Albany... have yet to find a reason to return

Again, it doesn't matter to me at all. Just seems like Albany is too far north to get lots of attendees. The original discussions of TCE last year or so did seem to prove fruitful after all. Though, Jersey is not a bad idea with NYC, Philly and DC so close.

Well, as long as word gets around, I'm sure people around New York State won't mind a bit of driving. If successful, its bound to grow. I'll be pushing a few people around here (people from Montreal and Ottawa) to make the trip too. I figure if I'm willing to take a 6 hour drive down to Albany (or similarly placed area), others will be too.

Looking at the map, Albany is out of the question. Too far removed from the beaten track.
New Jersey seem to be a bit more centrally located to Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and the New England states.

Now, the question is do you focus on North Jersey (NYC area), South Jersey (Philly area), or "down the shore", as we say, in the Atlantic City, Wildwoods, Ocean City, Cape May area?

IF its New Jersey Trenton looks pretty central. But what info I need from you yanks is the travel issues. Something that looks central may be as hard as heck to actually get to. I know all those places are relatively short distances from each other. But in traffic distance don't mean squat.
What about Philadelphia? That's a cool town, lots of history, LOTS of history, several good game shops, good walking district. And it seems central.

Philadelphia could work, just watch if there are union issues setting up shop. An alternate venue may be some of the hotels, etc. in the Cherry Hill, NJ area. It's right across the river from Philly, FREE and more plentiful parking (which is NOT available in Philly, IME) and the city is a short drive or PATCO train trip from there. I do know that one small con was held at the Hilton in Cherry Hill, but I didn't attend.
Perhaps All Things Fun's owner, Ed, could help you out, Steve? I imagine he knows the local comic cons' locations and could tell better than I what venues would be good places to host TCE. Take a business trip and maybe Ed or I can drive you around for a day?

Philly would work. I've been looking for more reasons to go there.

Do NOT go inside a major city. Look for a city/town nearby and still on a main interstate that also goes into the main city.
Its not like you need a HUGE facility. So a decent sized nearby town will likely have convention halls and such for hopefully much better prices. That is what we found out when we set up Gem Shows sponsored by our rock club. We still pulled in thousands of attendees. Your hoping for what? A thousand?
So look for access to Interstates, and towns/cities near to the BIG cities. Airports may be of importance, but that depends on how popular the Trolls and C&C are. IE would one of their CONS be important enough to pay for airlines tickets? I doubt it.

As fascinating as it would be to visit, I'm looking at travel times (driving-wise) and Philadelphia is about twice the length of time it would take from Montreal to Albany. An 8 hour drive to Philadelphia will be a bit harder to manage. On the plus side, it'll be easier to convince the wife to take a trip to Philadelphia than it would Albany.
However, if the destination for Troll Con East keeps on moving further south... I'm going to have to start pushing a Troll Con North!

Good points, Treebore.
That's why I suggest Cherry Hill, Mount Laurel, or another South Jersey suburb. I-295 and the NJ Turnpike (and thus, I-95 and I-76) are nearby and there are not as many traffic snarls (other than rush hour) to contend with. Plus, parking at venues on this side of the Delaware River are generally more spacious and free, like I said above.

I went to Montreal to see a Flyers-Habs game back in 2002. Took about 8 hours, but the beautiful drive through upstate NY made it worth it. C'mon down for TCE. You won't regret it (wherever it may be, LOL).
The only place it should get hairy on the road would be I-287 and the NJ Turnpike. According to my Microsoft Streets & Trips, the trip should be about 6 hours, but I believe we stopped twice for meals (not including gas stops).

Now we haven't settled on anything yet. Start throwing options out for us to consider...and his isn't just moriarty, but everyone.
There was a time, a few years ago that I went to Portland Maine every year and then, er 'traveled' my way to New York City and back up with lots of stops on the way. But I never drove so it all blends together.
