Instant C&C gaming ~ roll and go!!
Instant C&C gaming ~ roll and go!!
OK, so I thought we might get the gaming group together this weekend, but no one was able to make except my nephew. So yesterday we played Cathedral and then some Adventurer, the Card Game.
We ate some pizza and watched Prince Valiant and Excalibur.
I could tell he was hoping to play some C&C, so this morning I pulled out a few modules - Slag Heap and Back to Blacktooth Ridge, to see if I could find something for a one shot for one player. Had a few thoughts and then I just decided to completely wing it.
I told him to roll up 2 characters and think about hiring a henchman or hireling. So while he did that, I thought about a section of Slag Heap, The Phoenix Barony and B1's Quesqueton and said . . . heck, I'll just draw up a quick dungeon for a nice low level dungeon crawl and BAM . . . done in about 10 minutes.
Traps, rooms, monsters, statues, treasure, low magic items - done.
He rolled up 2 elves ~ monster hunter (assassin) and druid and hired a halfling fighter.
Just south of Yggsburgh across the river, local farmers and constable hire them to find a missing young girl and locate some goblins who have been harassing and stealing from the local farmers there.
The constable and farmer lead the group to an entrance to what appears to be a stone complex behind some bushes and trees on the side of a hill.
So anyway, it was a great adventure for my nephew (and his party of 3) who was able to avoid a couple of traps, defeat 4 goblins, rescue the girl from captivity, kill a giant spider (the monster hunter succeeded in death attacking the big nasty brute!!), and finally beat a shadow mastiff (I choose him simply because he fell out of my bag of minis).
That was really fun for both of us ~ my first "seat of the pants" on the fly adventure and his first rolling up C&C characters from scratch (his char in our regular game is a converted 3.X fighter . . Regdar)!!

Sounds like much fun, Rhu. But you should have been there tonight... it was brutal. # party members down, one reduced to 1st level again, and you guys still haven't found what you're looking for. Man do I love being a ruthless CK.

Sounds like a great impromptu session. Sometimes the best games are the ones that take the least planning.
Agreed. My 5 year old son was sick over the weekend, so he and I created a PC for him, a multiclass Elven Fighter-Wizard for a one-on-one session.
Anyhoo, I plopped him into Greyhawk and off he went, patrolling the Jewel River as requested by his relatives in Celene. He and his two dogs (one hunting, the other a guard dog) spotted 20 kobolds making their way into Ulek from the Pomarj. He waited until the enemy was trying to cross a stream along the river and cast sleep. 7 went down, followed by an 8th via a magic missile. He switched to his bow and began picking off kobolds before they could get within spear range. Then, being 5, he decided to charge his light horse at the remaining 8, only to receive four spears attacking his horse, which threw him as it reared when he failed his Dex check to remain on his saddle. The injured horse skittered away to the far bank, where 4 of the 8 chased it.
He switched to his sword and dropped the four in the middle of the river (stream here, really) before slaying the remaining four via his bow as they fled.
Great little mini-session and he enjoyed it (going downstairs to tell his grandmother his exploits). Sorry if this is a threadjack, but I felt it fits the theme of "Roll and go!"

Cool. 99.9% of my games are made up on the spot, so, its good to see and hear of others having fun with the simplicity of just having fun.
When I was younger, I could do it easily. Taking off 10 years made me forget how to pull it off. Switching to C&C in the last 3 years has made it so easy because the SIEGE engine removes so much worry over "getting the rules correct" out of it. I did SOME ad libbing in 3e, but I couldn't do it at this high frequency. It amazes me how much I've been able to create on the spot. It's like I got my creative mojo back.

That is actually kind of a cool slogan for C&C, Basic C&C, or the like. "Roll and go!"

Thanks for all the comments, fellows!
Thanks to Casimir Polaski, it was a school holiday today. So instead of C&C gaming I gave some impromptu revolutionary war lectures and studies for my nephew! NOT!!
Actually more random mapping and quick loading of traps and dungeon rooms and corridors. Heh, I put in a round room where the ceiling descends to crush the inhabitants a la Indiana Jones. They barely made it out of there.
But they rushed out the wrong door and were trapped in another room - which has the reset lever. So they had to reset and rush back through the room and again almost didn't make it!!
Giant frogs almost swallowed the halfling fighter but he rolled well on his STR saves. The assassin nicely avoided a poison gas trap on a treasure chest they found (I gave them a small diamond inside).
In looking at my map today, I realized I was subconsciously recreating a mix between Quesqueton (B1) and Gary's Greyhawk dungeon - so I guess it's sort of completely un-original!!
Still loads of fun to create.

Ross man, that is such a compfy, awesome sight; I wish I could step into that picture, pull up a chair...and game.
P.S. I think your post has inspired me to try 'off the cuff gaming'.

Heck yeah, man. The many worlds of dragons, monsters, dungeons, heroes, princesses, fantastical adventures and the power and strength of the forces of good over darkness will lift you into the next realm of consciousness . . .
Huh, what?
Never mind that, we'll have some fun, eh?

Thanks. And I could have removed a couple. I used the CZ Yggsburgh book to get some quick info on the South Pastures and then pulled out my 2E Arms and Equipment guide to show my nephew another picture of the glaive-guisarme.
That's the M&T in front of me and we each had a PH.
In my regular game, I usually only have the PH on the table.

When we saw the photos Titania was sitting next to me. As I was thinking it, she said, "That looks like our gaming table!"
Ours is just not as roomy in terms of space around the table. Its kind of closed in by walls and two bookshelf units filled with RPG goodness.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
