So what happens now?

I know the shock hasn't even wore off yet. Perhaps it's my Missouri upbringing or it's the nature of my family to literally work through our grief. But, where do we go from here? How do we carry on Gary's legacy and see to it his final works see the light of day? And who, if anyone, can fill his shoes?

Excuse me if this is out of line but it does help with the grief.

It has been stated elsewhere that, with the Castle project, everything was already planned out by Gary and that will be finished. The question is what will happen to LA. I have not seen, or looked, for any answers to that question.

I thought The Man had a co-writer for Castle Zagyg anyway.

It's OK Julian... at some point last evening I had similar thoughts. I'm sure the majority of the work will see the light of day as Gary intended making these releases even more substantial in my mind.

However, to answer your question Treebore, I think LA will also be fine. The revised rulebook for LA only was missing the art:

Beyond that support for the game, such as supplements and adventures, are in the hand of other talented writers and contributors.

I was fortunate enough to be part of Gary's last published product before his passing, the Shade the Trickster card for the Adventurer game, but it will not be the last of Gary's work that you see.

There are a couple of unpublished Gord the Rogue short stories that he and I had done. There is also a new Gord novel that we were in the middle of writing, along with a bunch of springboards for other story ideas we had.

If, in time, the family still wants to go forward with these projects I would fully support it.

He had mentioned many times that there was enough of his stuff queued up to have new material coming out for a couple years after he was gone.

We do business as usual, remembering where it all came from, and why we still do it: because it is what Gary would want (I feel; I can't speak for him or his family), and we enjoy what he has given us. There is no more fitting tribute than to take his legacy and do what he has always encouraged - make it our own.

Well said Serl... the only thing I'll add was posted on Jeff Rient's Blogg:
Quote:
Things You Can Do To Keep Gygax's Memory Alive

* Play some OD&D or 1st edition AD&D, or one of the other games Gary created.

* Adapt one of his modules to whatever fantasy system you are using nowadays. B2 The Keep on the Borderlands is a particularly good choice for "serious" role-players, if you focus on all the intrigues surrounding the various factions of humanoids in the Caves of Chaos.

* Name your next pet Gary, Gygax, or Mordenkainen. (I am not taking any responsibilty if you name your next kid Gygax or Mordenkainen. You're on your own on that one.)

* Build that Dragonchess set you've been meaning to construct ever since you read about it in issue #100 of Dragon.

* Players: Specialize in an oddball polearm, swear "by Gygax's beard", play a cleric of Zagig.

* DMs: drop the Ring of Gaxx into your setting, sprinkle some scrolls of Mordenkainen-brand spells about your dungeon, use a rust monster or a bulette.

* Write that module or game or whatever that you've been meaning to get around to. Submit it for publication or publish it yourself.

* Keep a sharp eye out for the next weird little game that might become a breakout hit, spawning cartoons, films, comic books, novels and countless imitators.

* Tell the hobgoblins "It's okay, Gary sent us!"

* Crack open your 1st edition DMG and just luxuriate in the unmistakeable Gygax prose.

* Send a letter or e-mail to another game designer thanking them before it's too late.

* Introduce someone else to the fun that is this crazy little hobby.

* Game like there's no tomorrow.

I know there's a few things on that list I plan to do or follow up on.

Blessings through Wisdom folks!

Ultimately, Gary's family will likely have the final word on what goes as far as releasing the new products from him. Steve and TLG have a great relationship with the Gygax family and so I suspect the products will ultimately be released by TLG. I hope this is the case. I don't want to think I've seen the last of Gary's products, no matter the publisher.

Game, game, and game some more!

The rest will take care of itself.

LA will be fine! The rules have been written. More adventures are being written all the time. We will continue the flame!

The LA books are just in need of errata included and art. This is in progress. The Castle will also be finished since long held contingency plans have been available and are now in process.

Any insights/updates on the LGGC con?

Our Captain has fallen.

We rally and soldier on. He would want and expect nothing less.

LGGC IV is June 20-22, 2008. Gary was very proud of this show.

Unless we are directed otherwise.

At LGGC we will release:

CZ Upper Works Boxed Set

&

Lejendary Rules for All Players Revised (hardback)

We continue with the King of England King of France, the CZ City Books, Lejendary Pantheons, the Gord Reprints and multitude of other projects Gary had sent us.

This has taken the wind out of me, but mid-week next week I'll have a better handle on all this.

Thanks,

Steve

This terrible news has made me realize that I need to make time to go on all those adventures I had always planned.

There is an academic tradition of publishing a "Festschrift" - a collection of new works in his/her honor - upon the death of a well-known figure. Is this sort of thing possible? I'm picturing a collection of modules, in deliberately Gygaxian style and perhaps in deliberate imitation of the great B2, G, and D series. I suppose WotC has the originals locked up and might make such a tribute impossible, but perhaps something similar would be a fitting memorial.

Best Wishes,

Christopher

That is a very good idea.

Done. Although in reality, I didn't write it. I only edited it.

It's OD&D, but with AD&D added in some areas, B/X added in others, and even a little d20 tossed in for good measure (equipment only. This is OD&D after all). I originally had no intention of giving it away publicly because of fear of Hasbro. But, I don't give a damn about Hasbro. Thus this small gesture from me, as a way of saying "thanks for all the memories" and to encourage the creation of new ones.

[EDIT: Changed the link to "The Gray Book" to something without download limits, as I'm sure people got sick and tired of Geocities constantly shutting down my downloads site for C&C. Download link now also available in my signature.]

Same goes for me... Hasbro be damned! Here's my homage to AD&D ala Gygax done up ala Castles & Crusades.

Thanks to the Troll Lords for giving Gary Gygax a home and the respect he deserved! That's a big reason why I've bought just about every C&C product you guys have put out (including all 3 printings of the PHB) and why C&C, to me, is the closest thing to AD&D (in spirit) that I've played in the last 8 years.

PS: Excellent work Traveller! I'm reading through it right now.
