Re: BSG Tonight!
Oh good. I'll know just when to ignore the TV and that channel then.
Thank goodness the travesty is nearly over.

Sorry, I tried to get into it, but just couldn't. I'm afraid the best I can say is "Good for you. I hope it wraps up in great fashion for ya.

I liked parts of BG that I saw during the first season. Some actors and shows were less than stellar but I didn't think it was awful at all.
But I haven't seen anything since the sci-fi channel moved into premier mode on my cable network.

Ummm... it's better than Flash Gordan at least...
Though that's not raising the bar very high.

I think it's one of the best shows on TV today.
It is certainly different, and far more politically charged (both ideologically and religiously)..

I also think it is a great show, though not without its flaws. To my mind, the concepts are not particularly new, but I think it has been well put together.
Mind, I think that is equally applicable to Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which addresses many of the same themes.

Heh, Obviously no show does not suffer "flaws"....
Any "epic arc plot" series can run into overly extapolated sections (the mid-section of last season on BSG for instance really stretched).
What I like is not the man as creator/creator turns on man motifs, but the willingness to recast "good and evil" as grey concepts - then to challenge the concepts of "righteousness" as merely a function of one's point of view or needs at any given moment. To me, that is something new with the show (which I think turns a lot off, becuase it's really unsettling).
I mean, seriously, it's the Cylons who come preaching "there is but one God," while the humans are polytheistic or secular unbelievers. It is the Cylons who use force to "bring order," and the humans who are "insurgents" who use terrorism to live.
The question for how good the series will ultimately be judged is how it is ended. Indeed, I think it's actually a good thing that this is the last season, as most series (in fact, almost all) outlive their strengths and become redundent shells (Lost, 24, and most of all ER!) of their former selves.
While I understand why many just don't like the particular vision here, one thing I have trouble comprehending is when I hear people gripe on the acting... from Olmos to James Callis most of these actors have gotten fairly strong reviews, and even kudos from numerous organizations. Hey, I was a fan of the 78-79 original myself, but the acting back then was pretty dang bad (not quite Buck Rogers bad), but that wasn't the point to those shows.
Anyway, I am a fan and am looking forward to the last season.

*chuckles* I couldn't care less about the acting, new storline, re envisioning and so forth....
I do care when they take my campy fun and turn it into some verbose melodrama.
Its like someone taking the very campy and fun Hawk the Slayer and 'updating' it into some new profound life lesson tv series.
Just ruins it for me.

Almost all of that is also true of Terminator and a number of older sci fi shows (the Montheistic versus Polythestic stuff doesn't matter much to me, as virtually nothing comes of it).
I don't find it unsettling, so much as 'run of the mill', especially the 'who is the real monster'? stuff. I still like it though, and am also looking forward to the new season.

Great idea!
I dunno, I always liked the original series, but I don't mind them exploiting the brand to make something different either. Both versions have their merits as far as I am concerned.

Yeah this that's my take -
The campy fun of the original is what it is.
The new one is just a whole different type of show,
I happen to like both, others don't.

My problem with the show is that is has devolved into a soap opera.
I have no problem with a darker vision of the story, but now who can even keep track of how many betrayals there has been. Now there are several more established characters that seem to be Cylons. They've pulled the pull a gun on Adama/the President/Baltar thing a few times too many.
Frankly, that branch of humanity is probably too dysfunctional to survive.
Shoot 'em down before they reach Earth. Got enough troubles of our own without those whack-jobs.

I like Battlestar too.
Gotta love Col. "Pirate Tigh" and the Chief.
And we're all really cylons. Maybe I'm one of those short, bald, ugly types. Oh wait, they don;t have that kind.

The original Battlestar Galactic is only campy because it's been nearly 30 years. Back then, BSG was the most expesive show on TV and took itself very seriously.
The same could be said for the melodrama of the latest series in 30 years.
While new BSG is very dark, and extremely (melo)dramatic, there are some extremely worthwild performaces. Colonel Saul Tigh (Micahel Hogan), William Adama (Edward James Olmos), and Apollo (Jamie Bamber) give some really, REALLY good performances as thier characters. The character are interesting, develop as the show contines and really show of some great acting skills, at least IMO.
As for melodrama and the fear of the show turing into "that sci-fi show of the 2000s" the creators have decided to go out on top with the finale of the 4th season (which will most likely end in 2009).

*chuckles* I had it direct from the actor who played Bojay himself, Jack Stauffer, that they certainly did not take it 'seriously'.

Well I certainly dont discuss this with any of theactors on original BSG, but from a general point of view of how the original show was presented, and especially from the point of Richard Hatch, Battlestar Galactica was a sweeping space epic. Though, it was campy as hell even in it's time as I recall. I never took the show as serious. Bah.

This has been mentioned several times in 2007 and NBC in particular is considered as the frontrunner in any possible retelling of V.serleran wrote:
