TLG's anthropomorphic RPG - by deogolf

In about a month, the new Chronicals of Narnia, Prince Caspian film will be released. When the first film hit the theaters, there was a wave of people who had considered running a Chronicles of Narnia style game. For those of you who have read the Prince Caspian book or plan on seeing the movie, I think that this release in particular will bring about another wave of Narnia-style campaigns. Prince Caspian IMHO is more RPG-like and lends itself well to a more traditional style of fantasy roleplaying.

Here's some pictures of the characters in the new Narnia, Prince Caspian film:
http://movies.aol.com/movie/the-chronic ... cter-guide

So, some months ago it was annouced that TLG has an anthropomorphic style RPG in the works (I think by Sieg). Is there any word or update on this possible new game? There will be lots of talk about it due to the release of the film, why not generate some buzz before the release of the movie so that the writers and TLG can say this game was not just because of the new Narnia film.

Well, it's still in the works. I, not Sieg, am the responsible party for it. The artwork (by Jim Holloway) and MS has been handed over to Steve.

It was written in C&C language, so incorporating humans and the like is entirely doable. My version doesn't included humans or any other humanoids. It is more along the lines of Redwall, Mistmantle, or Mouse Guard.

I guess I could post a few illos from it, but that would depend on good ole Steve-o!

Very interesting...somehow I missed the announcement about this project. Art by Holloway definitely sells it further.

Even though anthropomorphism gets a bad rap (at least, from me it does!) on account of furries, it does have a long legacy in fantasy literature and folklore.

Slightly OT, it makes me happy to see the dwarves of Narnia are neither forced perspective nor digital creations. Nor are they just short humans (D&D 1, I'm looking at you!). Peter Dinklage and Warwick Davies look great in their respective roles.

Sorry Deogolf, my advanced age must be failing me on this. My bad. However, the idea is intriguing and I would very much like to see what can be made of this. Particularly, with the upcoming release of a good fantasy film.

I will only be interested in it if dark faerie tales can be told with it. I am not interested in another "kiddie animal game." There are far too many of them.

There are no furries in this game. If they appear, they will die a most horrible death!!

Serl, you can make it as dark as you want!

I have the makings of a second adventure that is much darker than the first. Hopefully, things go well and it too will see the light of day!

Yeah, it would seem you could make a dark fairy tale game out of even C&C. Speaking of dark fairy tales, did Fantasy Flight's GRIMM RPG ever get released?

Yes, Grimm is available.

I am glad this RPG allows for dark tales; most of these types of games are light and fluffy. A few, notably Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or After the Bomb (which I consider within the genre) are more sci-fi or militant, so its good to have something to flex and flux.

This statement leads me to believe that your original submitted MS was about adventure-sized (20-32 pages). Can you give details on that? For some reason when this was first mentioned, I got the idea that the anthropomorphic RPG would be one of the Seige Box games.

Though, you could just be referring to and adventure contained within the original MS I suppose.

DETAILS man, DETAILS.

The idea and how we were going to present it has changed a bit as its gone along. First, a C&C adventure, then something different (I can't remember what), and now I do believe its going to be a boxed set of some sort using the Siege Engine. It was originally written in C&C, so porting it over shouldn't be a problem.

Seeing that it's an introductory adventure geared toward the younger crowd, I did keep it more on the lighter side. But, if they don't play things smartly, they could quickly be in trouble. Plenty of places to lose characters.

As I mentioned a few months back, the main PCs are mice, rabbits/hares, otters, badgers, or squirrels. The arch-types fighters, magic-users (sorry, its what I call them), clerics, and thieves.

The main inspiration was Brian Jacques' Redwall series, but is not based on his world. It starts out investigational, but there will be some combat before its all over. The main premise is that a group of harvesters from a nearby farm have disappeared and the Lord of Wheat Hollow has dispatched a group to find out what's going on. Due to a couple of poor growing seasons and early winters, food is at premium. The village of Wheat Hollow needs all the food it can get to survive the winter. That, and the fact that a good portion of the village has just disappeared.

It should only take one or two nights to finish it. But, could last longer depending on how things turn out.

Might be a good way to incorporate awakened familiars / companions.

Very cool. Thanks for the info, Deogolf.

I had thought you were working on something utilizing the Redwall series, but this idea sounds every bit as interesting.

Looking forward to seeing the work.

Yffing should never be a cross-class skill... well, unless you are into crossing that boundry. Leave the furries alone.

Wow,

I never heard of this either till now.

Redwall was the second fantasy novel I ever read, right after The Hobbit!

I always wanted a game that was D&D but in Redwall setting and thought many times about making something like that up (and porting ideas from Palladium's TMNT).

Very cool.

Yeah, based on the subject I was worried there for a sec that the Trolls were planning to take their future releases in a very weird direction.

Dude! This looks like a blast! Love the Holloway art!

When is this supposed to be released?

Not sure about a release time. Steve was hinting at sometime this summer; but, with Gary's death and the everything else that has gone with it, I'm sure it's going to be later than that.

Mice Templar?! I'll have to check that one out! Thanks!

I'll pass along the kudos to Jim. He'll be glad to hear it!
