Earthquake in Salem, Illinois - Coleston are you OK??

Post by Tadhg »

5.4 on the Richter scale!

Tremors felf in Chicago and Milwaukee.

Hopefully our friend Coleston is OK and his town didn't suffer any damage. Haven't heard any specific reports yet.

In one of the other threads, the poster mentioned this event. Said he didn't even feel it.

Hey thanks Rhu! We're fine here - tossed around a bit!

Actually, the earthquake was centered in West Salem which is 64 miles east of the Salem I live in (I guess it's west of Salem, Mass). There's also a New Salem which I think is up around Chicago. It woke me up with the bed shaking and the gutters rattling against the house! We had an aftershock around 10AM.

No damage around here - although I was just sure my kids school would have been in ruins or something!

Didn't feel the original (sleeping) or the aftershock (at work).

Ah, that'll be later in the weekend when the kids are at grandma's.

Glad to hear this, John.

So, y'all got some cheap thrills!
But a little reminder - stronger quakes down there would be disastrous for you guys and even us further away.

Let's hope another 100 years goes by before the next one (and that it's minor!!).

No doubt Rhu! Yes, I heard that our earthquakes around the New Madrid fault (the Walbash fault is the northern end of the New Madrid) are from way, way down in the earth since we are in the middle of the continental shelf - that's why they can be felt for hundreds of miles away. Earthquakes in California, still as dangerous, are much more local since their fault is much closer to the edge of the continental shelf. At least that's what the guy from the US Geological Survey said.

Our big ones even make rivers change direction!

Let's hope that the 5.2 quake today wasn't a precursor!

"Cheap"? My wife is high maintenance! (Actually no, she's raising three boys under the age of 8 - she's a trooper!)
