Who wants a nuclear war?

So we can ride the roads in super-charged, suicide machines, possibly get mutanty powers, or just plain do the 'cool looking nomad thing' on the -fast spreading- desert wastes?

I answered this from a "serious" point of view, taking into account that such an event would result in the die off of billions of people.
Have I ever thought/imagined living in such a world? Yeah, I played Aftermath and keep it on my book shelf for a reason. But a realistic answer is no, plus I am already a mutant, with a 1 in 20,000 mutation.

I'm with Tree! I enjoyed playing Gamma World, but I really wouldn't want it any other way - except maybe with lower gasoline prices!

Oh yeah. Great idea Slimy.....
I guess if you are in bomb shelter with a bunch of gamers and a stack of C&C books it might not be all bad.

When the Troll Lord used to go camping alot we would occasionally talk about nuclear war. Of course this was in the mid 80s when the threat was very, very real. I remember it always ended up with Charlie and I talking about how we would talk about how we would survive. Of course being in the woods in Arkansas, in the summer, around a camp fire meant that we were in the woods in Arkansas, in the summer, around a camp fire surrounded by 47 billion mosquitoes. Someone would bring up the horrifying concept of what we would do without OFF. There is only one solution of course. Cover yourself in mud from head to toe!
The conversation, already bad as it was, would take a definite turn for the worse . . . . Mac would get pissed, still does when some one mentions a post apocalyptic world and covering one's self in mud.
Ahhh Good times. Good time.

You make it sound like covering one's self in mud is a bad thing.

Seeing as I live right outside of Chicago and would be dusted in any major exchange- I'd say no.
Not sure I'd WANT to survive one either.

Red Dawn in the Razorback state? Doesn't everybody in the midwest & south have an SKS or two in their hidden, underground stash just for such emergencies?

Understood. It's just a whole lot easier to wage a guerilla war when you can use your enemies own ammo.

Yeah, back in teh day us gamers would have similar discussions about what we would hoard, and what guns we'd have at the time. Though, none of that would ever really matter much, eh?

I answered this from a serious point of view, taking into account that I live within 15 miles of The World's Largest Gas Station (McConnell AFB.) It would result in the die-off of me!
I decided long ago that if I was informed that missiles were incoming from over the North Pole, I'd have enough time to get in the car, hit a fast food place and a liquor store, and still be able to drive out to McAFB to watch the fireworks whilst enjoying one, last picnic lunch.

Guns are for amateurs. Real men use swords. They don't require bullets.

The amount of these guns in the Ozarks is would be scary if ever disclosed. Let's just say if China invaded they would face a mobile hit and fade force armed with their own weapons.
That said, I would like to see a cold war themed game come out like a SIEGE version of Twilight 2000.

Kinda on the topic. What are some good movies on the topic? (reality based or far-fetched) "The Day After" was one I remember.

Agreed. My granny used to say, "If there's ever a nuclear war, I want to be right underneath one of those bombs when it drops".
Smart woman, she always was. Even she knew that in the event of a real nuclear war, "the living will envy the dead", as the saying goes.
But as for post-apocalyptic gaming -- well now, THAT can be fun!
I tend to leave the details of "what happened to cause all this" vague, mostly because a) I know too much about what a nuclear exchenge would actually do to life on Earth to get behind it as a campaign rationale, and b) it becomes just another Big Mystery for the players to investigate. Mystery = Suspense = Good
I cut my gaming teeth on the original-box Gamma World, and loved it.
I ended up loving the Morrow Project campaign setting best though, largely because it had a kernel of hope at its core, which worked against the really dark strain of nihilism which can infect and overwhelm too many post-apocalyptic settings.
Morrow Project players weren't merely expected to survive, they were expected to try to make things better where and when they could.
The Morrow Project rules mechanics as such, I never liked, but the setting remains my favorite post-apocalyptic rpg setting to this day, despite its ancient "dawn of rpg gaming" nature and quality.
For those who might care, I thought the adventures Damocles and Operation: Lucifer were the coolest. The first concerns a pre-war AI gone nutty and dangerous (a common late-1970s trope), while the latter features a mad post-apocalyptic cult who've gotten their hands on a nuke, and they plan to "cleanse" the unbelievers but good.
Again, the original MP stuff is very primitive by today's gaming standards, but the setting has always stayed with me.
The new owners of Timeline (Morrow Project's publisher) have been trying to get a modern (fourth) edition of the game out for a couple of years now but, respectfully, they appear to be in over their heads. The game is supposedly in beta-test now, but it's become one of those "I'll believe it when I see it for sale" things for me now.
As per the link above, you can still buy reprints of the old MP rulebooks and adventures from these guys, if you're curious. I've bought from them repeatedly, and they were always legit with me.
I remember Serleran saying something about his working up a SIEGE engine post-apocalyptic game. If it lets me do Morrow Project-style adventures with the same ease that I can run C&C, I'll be all over that, I expect.

For my Post-Apocalyptic inspiration, I prefer the strike of a comet or asteroid. Lucifer's Hammer is a fantastic book, and I'd game with that as the starting premise.
Kicking off a campaign with "Hello Dr. Falken. Would you like to play a game?" would be pretty wild, though.

That's a much better rationale, Fiffergrund! Absolutely.
Knowing what we now know about the true results of nuclear warfare. The only things left would be the roaches and Keith Richards, as the joke used to go. (Coming Soon to your FLGS: "Roaches & Richards" -- the brand new post-apocalyptic rpg from Troll Lord Games!).
My quantum physicist friend I sometimes mention here (he's a source of great anecdotes) has security clearances such that he once ended up at an outdoor barbeque (of all things) with the military men who literally have their fingers on the button (keys, actually) at the nuclear silos.
I had to ask him what they were like. He said:
Very nice guys -- extremely conservative. Their families were there, and it was like watching people from a 1950s sitcom.
Unfortunately, he continued, they were also crazy as hell.
After I'd had a couple glasses of gin, he told me, my curiousity got the better of me, and I actually asked the guys privately how they got their heads around being in charge of weapons which could extinguish all life on Earth.
My friend said that they looked at him, and answered -- completely earnestly -- that they believed that their actions, if needed, would help to hasten Judgement Day, and the Rapture, for the faithful. All part of God's plan, you see ...
My physicist friend is an atheist, while I am not. In relating this story to me, he laughed and said, isn't there something in Christianity about peace and mercy? What they were talking about, that's not Christianity, that's just crazy!
I agreed, but we quickly realized that the only people who would willingly take the job of manning the doomsday missiles would _have_ to be crazy from an ordinary perspective.
Strange world we've got here, my friends,
TheNewGuy

mythbusters proved that cockroaches (at least the germanic variety) can only withstand 10k rads. there are insect species that can survive 100k rads. a human can take about 1k... so to do it right, even the cockroaches would die. a shame as i was looking forward to their leadership.
'course the neatest thing is that something hit with radiation does not, necessarily, become radioactive.
