Converting 3.5 XP to C&C

Post by Storm Queen »

I plan to run Paizo's Rise of the Rune Lords soon in C&C. One of the main issues is the experience point conversion, since C&C has varied XP tracks when compared to the standard 3.5 one. I plan to give out XP based on the 3.5 Challenge Rating (as opposed to totalling up all of the monster/treasure XP C&C style.)

So this is my current plan - calculate XP as per the standard 3.5 CR system, based on average party level against the given CR. (Two class multiclasses will count as 2 levels at level 1, 4 at level two etc.)

And then, multiply the 3.5 XP by the value given when you divide a C&C XP track by the standard 3.5 XP track. (The C&C XP track used will either be the fighter XP track or the average of all C&C XP tracks.)

The multipliers are indicated as below (I'll probably round down.)

Any thoughts? Comments? Does this make sense?

I have found that just mulitplying 3E XP's by 1.5 and then awarding XP's based on the treasure is surprisingly close to what they would be following the C&C guidelines. Like the 4 times I compared the numbers in a Goodman DCC I ran, they were within 10% of each other. Which I can correct for by just multiplying the final totals by 10% to get it to equal what it would have been in C&C.

The simplest way to do XP's is just see where you want the party levels to be by each point in the Pathfinder series, and just make sure you award enough XP's to have them there by the time they reach that point. If your concerned about them earning their XP's just throw in other adventures. Like with PAthfinder 1 throwing Keep on the Borderlands to make them totally eradicate the kobold/Goblin threat, etc...

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Nice ideas, Treebore.

However, I think it'll be fiddly to track magic item XP, so I'll see how it goes if I just give out XP based on CR. I also think it may be a bit difficult to track XP purely based on completion percentage of the adventure. (If PCs wander back and forth, it can be a bit muddy to work out which segments are 'cleared' and which ones aren't.)

I'll give the XP multiplication idea a trial and see how it goes.
