I used to post more (old TLG board), now I lurk more. Guess for a couple of reasons. Got really busy, and have sufficiently internalized the rules enough to no longer really have any questions - getting really good at just winging things.
I do post more frequently over at other C&C boards - so I guess it's also a matter of having a more favourite forum
Gamed D&D in the mid 80's to early 90's. Stopped playing from the mid 90's to about early 2005. been playing C&C ever since.
Cheers,
J.

Welcome all. Thanks for dropping from the ceiling. I like the idea of a monthly or weekly general discussion topic just for fun.
Keep the posts coming.

I mostly lurk here and elsewhere (NC, DF) because I don't have a chance to play much these days - were I playing regularly I'd have more to say and more questions to ask. I do buy a lot of product and read it - and I lurk online - for vicarious gaming satisfaction in the absence of the real thing. Most of my posts will involve (and have involved) comments about products that I'd like to play or queries about campaign construction for my envisioned gaming future. Without an active game my nuts and bolts questions will be pretty minimal.

Well, I don't think I exactly lurk here... I frequently visit and have posed my share of questions. This is one of the VERY few forums I have signed on to though. When I first heard of C&C and tried to learn everything I could... google served me well. Google brought me to these forums and what were the old forums for TLG.
My decision to dive in was influenced largely due to theses forums and, the first time I looked through the PHB and M&T books were from my copies I had ordered off of amazon.ca (which I pretty much got 24-36 hours later).
These forums have been great with great people and I do make a point to stop on by every day.
My own gaming experience is rooted in AD&D 2nd ed when it first came out in the late 80s. I was a military brat and living in Germany at the time and I found a couple of people, who became good friends, swapping fantasy related exploits. I quickly (with some help) created my first character and have been playing on and off ever since.
AD&D has always been my first love but I have played D&D (old red box), and have tried and played, MERP, TMNT, Twilight 2000, Shadowrun, Mechwarrior, Call of Cthuhlhu, Rifts, Star Wars (by WEG), Vampire, and finally came to WOTC's D&D and quickly bought into 3.0 and was very disgruntled when they put out 3.5
I have pleasant memories from all of them, but AD&D was always a favorite and D&D 3.5 was always an adustment. In terms of it's simplicity, WEG's Star Wars will always have a place in my heart.
Castles & Crusades though is brilliant and my old AD&D books are back into regular circulation because of it.
Thanks again!

I know a few of my players have lurked from time to time, but most of them don;t seem to be big board posters, anywhere even on our own group boards! It's no suprise that I can't get them to post here either.

I actually wrote the following as a reply to a post asking why we liked C&C or some such. I wrote it and just didn't want to post it...
So, here it is.
I started playing D&D in the fall of 1982 with the Basic set. I was immediately enamored with the game and soon moved on to AD&D. For some reason I equated Basic with fundamental or only for people who couldnt handle the real thing. Whatever the reason, I loved playing AD&D all weekend with my friends. It was easy to set up a game and run it on the fly NPCs were easily generated, even at higher levels. Around 89 or 90 I moved and started going to college in the south and had a very hard time finding folks to play with. After a couple of attempts, I gave up trying to find a game thinking people had given it up. The game was always on my mind and I would often think of things and wonder how they would work out in an adventure. I continued college, got married and have a couple of great kids. A few years ago I read an article by a British journalist commenting on the 30^th anniversary of D&D. At that point I decided to try to get a game going again only in the interim I had all of my stuff stolen from me and had to get new books and materials. So, the first thing I saw was D&D 3.5. At the time I remember wondering why they had dropped the A. I brought home the players handbook soon after and as I walked into the kitchen with it, my wife asked, What is that? I showed it to her and said I would like to start playing D&D again. She had never played before but said, to my delight, that she would like to play. She called a friend from work who she thought might be the type to play and we had a small gaming group. So, we played 3.5 for a while. I like learning new stuff. With this new game there was a lot to learn and I ate it up. Within a week or two I took the WotC online gamemasters test so I could get my RPGA membership without having to go to a con not that thats a bad thing. During that time, I had done some searches for Gary Gygax to see what he was up to and discovered Lejendary Adventure. One of the things I noticed was that the game moved much faster than our D&D games. Unfortunately there is just not enough support for LA and my softcover books are falling apart [where are the hardbacks?]. My wife and I work full time jobs as Engineers and raise a family as well. While I liked playing 3.5, I wanted something that moved fast like LA. Why not go out and buy the old books off of Ebay? (I did.) Then I saw a post on some message board (there are so many) about Castles and Crusades. A lot of people were saying good things about it. So I picked it up and we played a few games under that system. In fact, the first game I ran was the original AD&D Tomb of Horrors. What a great game! I liked how fast combat was. I liked the fact that players werent constantly looking up this rule or that we were immersed in the game. Later, we picked up a couple more players and my wife started running an LA module (Chris Clarks Enclave). On one of our gaming nights, we got a call from that couple saying they couldnt make it that night. So, I took five minutes and whipped up a C&C adventure and we played that for the night. One of the players gave me a complement that she couldnt tell the difference between the published mods I ran and the adventure I had outlined in those five minutes (and, of course, filled in during the game). This, to my mind, is the mark of a well designed game. But I still continued to ask myself whether I should just play AD&D or C&C. I already knew and loved AD&D, but with the exception of one, the other players did not. I can buy AD&D material off of Ebay for reasonable prices. Finally, I think it comes down to this: C&C is a new and supported game. I can take any AD&D material and convert it on the fly for C&C. Lately, I've been running The Temple of Elemental Evil. Conversions are on the fly and I will probably be inserting a few adventures of my own making (because it does not require a great deal of time and I like to customize for my players tastes) as well as new C&C published mods. My wife is continuing to run LA games. Currently, I am trying to find my way out of "The Hall of Many Panes."

Good story Mike. The current incarnation of the thread you mention writing this for is "lets finish this".

I post from time to time - I used to post more, back when C&C was in playtest and shortly after it was published.
Just been too dang busy, lately.
However, I've found a new job that should give me actual time to game, so I'm hoping to get something regular going in the near future.
In the meantime, I've been dabbling with CC3, and updating the maps of my campaign world with it. Wonderful program!

There is no flame war. See, so many of us come from playing 3E for YEARS that in itself proves the superiority of C&C, so no arguments or flamewars are needed. The proof is definitely in the pudding.

Yep I moved over from 3E or 3.5E and it just didn't have the right "feel" about it.
Started playing AD&D again and then saw the reveiws of C&C, so after geting the 1st print and seeing the advantages and it gave the old school vibe again Im hooked.
On top of that the Trolls are IMO very customer/player friendly steve has been very helpful in handling my orders and with the "freebies" his included hes gone out of his way to help.
Gamers need games and C&C with the Trolls producing it is the way forwards for RPG's and making gaming what I used to love back in the day.
So Trolls you just keep on doing what you do best, make games for gamers and to hell with 3E.

So why do you lurkers just lurk? Are you just checking out C&C and not sure your going to play, or what?
You have things to contrbute, such as who you are, where you live, why you are checking out or playing C&C, and everyone has ideas.
Or are only 30 of us interested in C&C and the rest are here because of LA?
Since you asked, here's my story (at the risk of being branded a heretic):
I've been playing OD&D and AD&D since junior high, and I still play with some of my high school buddies in an AD&D group that's stuck together for nearly 25 years (adding new friends and spouses along the way). Only one of the DMs moved fully into 2e so when it's his turn to DM we play 2e - otherwise it's still exclusively a 1e game, and that's never going to change.
I had seen D&D 3.0 in the mall but dismissed it immediately as we already had our game books and who needed new books for the same game? (my thought at the time) The nearest FLGS folded some years ago so I had never even heard of C&C until I discovered online forums - it was through those forums that I got my first opportunity to play LA - on EGG's porch, no less! But other than playing on Gary's porch, I don't know anyone else who plays LA (other than at LGGCs).
I first came to the old TLG forums when I heard about the first LGGC (knowing that there was going to be AD&D there, of course!). And honestly, that's why I came to the new forums as well, to keep tabs on LGGC '06.
I don't know anybody who plays C&C (except at LGGCs), so ordering the books online would be pointless, since our whole group never put down AD&D. I don't read the C&C forums at all, not because I've got anything against C&C, but simply because I don't play it.
If I ever did find a gaming group nearby that played C&C, and I found I liked the game, and more importantly, the group, I'd most likely get the books and get up to speed.
Until then, though, I've got enough AD&D players and adventures to last until they pry my books from my cold, dead hands...

Thats totally cool. The extra good news is if you ever do switch to C&C you'll still be able to easily use your MM's and adventure modules.
Heck, the biggest change for you guys would be positive AC's and roll save, add level, base of "x" stat to see if Prime or not. You could even still use all the 1E classes, xp charts, spells, movement, etc... If you want.

A world without heretics would be a dull place indeed! Your comments are welcome Jeffery and your story reminds me of one of my friends. He's been gaming for at least 20 years and had gone through OD&D and AD&D with much love and joy! When 3.0 came out, he picked up the core books (at the time, there was a lower price on them to 'encourage' gamers familiar to AD&D to pick them up) as he was curious.
He leafed through them noting some of the changes and differences, and they have sat on his shelf ever since. In the past 20 years he has developed him own game world with a few unique races and classes and all the rest... All the major NPCs in this world were formally characters he's played and those of his players to develop a rich tapestry...
There was no way he was going to do anything with 3.x because of ALL the work he'd done in the past and saw little point in trying to rework something for a newer system.
When he runs his game... it has been good old AD&D and that was that.
Since I've come across C&C not too long ago, I have been telling him about it and how it could be a relatively seemless transition for him. I got his attention and sometime in the near future, I'll put him through a scenario or two so that he can experience C&C first hand.
I'm not saying that he'll necessarily switch... I think he's happy with the notion that there's another company producing material which is compatible to a game system he already knows and loves.

Hey Jeffrey -
Liking the AD&D format makes you no heretic here, but I echo how easy it would be to transition to C&C - plus the ability to add on lots of new material that is being supported here and elsewhere (cncplayer.net, dragonsfoot, etc.)
If you haven't already you should check out Dragonsfoot.org for support. http://johnwright281.tripod.com/

Heh, I've been a member there for quite some time, and I've grabbed more D&D and AD&D resources than I'll actually ever use. I still haven't checked out their C&C forums, for the reasons I mentioned above.

What? Yes you do!
Did you forget our online PBP C&C game with Akrasia? And before that we played in a C&C PBP together. Online games count!!!
Jeffery, Jeffery, Jeffery . . . it's OK buddy. You can come out of the closet now. You're among friends here.

The only reason I didn't count those PbP games is that I don't have to know the C&C mechanics to play. To me it still looks like an AD&D game - Akrasia took care of all the rolls so we could've been using MERP for all I know... And that other game didn't last very long either, as you well know. 8)
Jeez, Rhu - maybe I shoulda just kept my mouth shut. On the other hand, pretty soon I'm gonna double my post count here...
