Thus, when you write explicit sexual scenes, you run the risk of alienating sections of the readership who don't share the author's notion of how sexual matters should be presented.
In my own work, I keep such things "off-camera", not out of prudery, but because it allows the reader to imagine "good sex" according to their own tastes.
I can't get it "wrong" this way, and accidentally disconnect the readers from the story, because the readers are filling in all the blanks _themselves_. TheNewGuy[/quote]
Im sorry. I cant agree. A writer should write it as she sees it. It can give us a look at a side of a character we need to know. If it is part of the story go for it. To do otherwise would compromising or pandering to the dictates of others, and lessen the impact of the story.

You've missed the essence of my original points entirely, and shored this up by quoting my original post _very_ selectively to serve your point of view.
It saddens me that you feel the need to criticize me, and yet you can't even be bothered to read what I actually wrote
For example, in my summary, I did indeed suggest that the writer write to please herself, when all is said and done.
Approaches to writing differ. I offered my perspective because I consider Tree a pal, and thought it might give he and his wife something to consider as they saw fit.
And now, I suddenly remember why I should be working on my next book, instead of being obliquely insulted by strangers on the internet.
Back to work for me,
TheNewGuy

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Chapter 5 is up! Feedback is appreciated! Things like do you like the characters? What don't you like about them? What pulled you into the story? What turned you off, etc...
No sexual stuff yet, just "adult content" such as insanity, suicidal thoughts, etc... Not so much in this chapter.

LOL Hilarious. I'm interested, and will have a look. Now, about explicit scenes, I'm not bothered by them. Quite the contrary, actually: I despise political correctness in Fantasy. I'm a fan of Moorcock, Leiber, Howard... none of them particularly fond of hiding a boob because some mom somewhere would have a fit over her child's readings.
It's about time to get some mature, adult content back in our Fantasy.

I've only read up to chapter 3 right now, so I can't give an up to date review. I will say that I'm liking the characters overall, however Jalhar right now is seeming a bit on the cliched "angsty anti-hero" side. I'm hoping that as I read further chapters, he'll evolve into something more original. Rowan is an interesting female lead, although I'm finding myself quite interested in her adopted family members Master Yu and Brian! Will we get to see more of them as the story progresses?
I'll try to get more read over the July 4th weekend!

I just saw your reply a bit ago, and it certainly seems that I owe you an apology, Realmsbard. As such, I offer one with no reservation.
I thought I saw something in your post which you clearly did not intend. Such is the failing of written text, I suppose; it never carries tone very well.
But, I'm not here to blame the text, or to offer any other sort of excuse. I was wrong, and I apologize unreservedly.
As for linking you to my work, as you mentioned, I regret to say I'm not comfortable doing that. As others here who've PM'ed me about where I'm from will attest, I've had some bad experiences online, and I am very, very skittish about revealing my identity on the web.
Suffice it to say, I'm neither J.K. Rowling, nor Michael Moorcock, nor am I the late Fritz Leiber. I'm merely a small-time Canadian author.
I am working on a C&C module for submission -- not because I can spare the time, but because I enjoy the game so much that the project won't leave me alone (I keep trying to abandon it, to free up writing time). If this module does live to see the submission stage, perhaps I'll submit it under my real name. I'm still debating. In any case, even if I do use my real name, I fully expect most people will still go, "Who?"
Regardless, I broke my cardinal rules of internet behavior -- don't post when tired, and never post when angry, and again you have my sincere apologies, sir.

No apology needed. Sometimes I step in it. Thats what you get when you become an old fart. Let's forget it and stomp some Orcs butt.
Good luck with the CnC mod

Hey, just got finished reading through chapter 6 (I'll catch up one of these days, really I will...)! I'm liking things more and more the further I get into the story, and Jalhar is fleshing out more as a character which I'm glad to see. Liked Grim's reaction when Rowan introduced herself--I imagine her name was a little too similar to "Rhiannon" for his comfort. What would have been hilarious would be some thoughts on Grim's end congratulating himself on being gentle and courteous to her despite everything, sublimely unaware that he was actually scaring the crap out of her!
Please tell your wife to keep up the good work, and I'll read more later!
