Lets try this again. Hopefully both of the previous posts were deleted by accident. Since one was a messed up post and was requested to be deleted.

My wife has regained publishing rights to a PDF only book she wrote years ago.

She would like to know if there would be interest in it being published, serial style, on our website. She has no plans at this time to try and get it "officially" published again. She will be rewriting it as it goes, because her writing style has improved a good bit over the last 4 to 5 years.

If you like the story she will be fine with you copying and printing it for your own personal use. We figure if you like the story, and if she does ever get it published again, you would buy it anyways.

It is a very D&D oriented romance story, with explicit "scenes".

Would the romance part bother you?

I'm fine with the explicit if it's done better than Laurell K. Hamilton's prose. If I want erotica, I want good erotica.

Prose? Thats a nice way to put it. No, my wife doesn't do raunchy. Her goal is to make her reader get aroused, but she doesn't go to L.K. Hamiltons levels to try to do so. But she doesn't gloss over everything either.

No problem. I used to avoid them like the plague until my wife made me realize some of them have very good stories hidden inside.

Like Laurel K. Hamiltons books were categorized as romance until about book 8, then we found them in the Horror/fantasy sections. Nothings changed, it still contains the same kinky sex and love triangles romance novels are known for. It still has the vampires, were creatures, Necromancers, etc...

But it got moved from Romance to Horror about 6 years ago. At least inside Barnes and Noble stores.

So since her series is in the Horror/fantasy section and has vampire, werewolves, and necromancers in it, would you read it now?

If you think you might, you may want to check out my wife's story, it has strong romance elements in it, but it still has high level thieves, magic users, clerics, paladins, etc... fighting primarily demons (the unclean) with acidic blood, their injuries cannot be healed easily, and their poison is 100% fatal unless you get help in time, even then your odds only become 50/50.

Plus it has good characters, with good gaming ideas, based around danger and romance. Its just the sex is a bit explicit, but I skip those. So think of Indiana Jones, with explicit sex, instead of suggested romantic tension.

Yes post the story. It's about time we had an adult D&D book. Don't worry about the naysayers. They will read it but will never admit it.

I think the poll is messed up, though, seems the first option is the title, not a clickable optoin.

Sure, so long as the "romance" doesn't beat you over the head with itself....and the explicit scenes are there to further the plot not just for jollies.

She does do her best to make the "pillow talk" add to the story, as well as have the sex scenes help develop the relationship more. So she has explicit sex to satisfy those who want it, and has it add to character development, and the story, who want that too. She doesn't think she succeeds very often, but that is what she attempts. I think she adds a lot, since as her editor/critique, I have to read the stuff.

Anyways, between this board and the other boards I posted this question on she has seen enough interest to go ahead and post it. I think we will get through the first chapter by tomorrow night. I'll post a link once we get ti up.

I;ll read it. heck if I like it I will even get my wife to read it She loved the first few LKH books but once they got to sex every other page we pretty much quit reading. I did notice there is a new one out though.

The explicit is in one chapter. Would it help if we put a warning on it?

The farm is doing good. We have plenty of chickens to give us all the nice fresh eggs we want. The goats produce plenty of milk for us to drink and make farmers cheese out of.

Right now we are doing an in door garden of just a few dozen tomato and pepper plants. When the rainy season hits in July we'll try growing a bunch of SPinach and other stuff.

Anyways, CHAPTER 2 IS UP!

I would love to read it-

I am a big fan of Anita Blake - a character by Laurell K Hamilton- I mention this because I enjoy romance and even some "explicit content-

But her novels have gone over the top and I find it a bit distracting....

The Meridith stories I cant even read because each chapter ends in some form of VERY EXPLICIT Sex scences...

I guess its a matter of how much of the story is centered on the explicit scenes....

I still would like to read it....

Relaxo speaks for me too ... I loathe genre snobs. Good is good, bad is bad. And each person makes their own decision as to which is which. Period. End.

The reason many people, especially manly menfolk like us here , seem to dislike romance in stories is that it's often poorly written (unconvincing) and simply doesn't read as true or plausible. It's "soap opera" genre short-form, as opposed to something we can believe.

The problem with explicit scenes of sexuality relates to this as well, in that, good sex is one one of those things most people enjoy, and yet _everyone_ has a highly personalized idea of what the phrase 'good sex" actually means.

Thus, when you write explicit sexual scenes, you run the risk of alienating sections of the readership who don't share the author's notion of how sexual matters should be presented.

In my own work, I keep such things "off-camera", not out of prudery, but because it allows the reader to imagine "good sex" according to their own tastes.

I can't get it "wrong" this way, and accidentally disconnect the readers from the story, because the readers are filling in all the blanks _themselves_.

An engaged reader will always imagine something far hotter on their personal heat-scale than I could ever write _for_ them, by definition.

My college friend, R. Scott Bakker, who wrote the Prince of Nothing fantasy trilogy (Book One, Two, and Three) is a great guy and a talented, intelligent writer -- but I absolutely _hate_ the way he writes sex scenes. Are they badly written? Nope. But they just don't work for _me_ at all.

Final comment? Your wife should write what feels true for her. We must always write to please ourselves first, or we have no hope of pleasing other readers.

The specific romantic/sexual content will matter less to me than how plausibly it's presented.
