Number its funny, nobody has mentioned that their parents hated the game.
Although it was never said, I think my parents did. I say that because they would never get it for me no matter how many times I asked, in the end, I had to borrow stuff from friends until I got enough scratch to buy my own.
I don't think it was a fundamentalist thing, or anything- they weren't like that. I think it just that it was so different from all the other stuff I did (My brothers and I were the neighborhood "jocks")
My brothers gave me shit about the "Satantic" bit- I just laughed and put a "death curse" on them- didn't work
What got me interested was the cover of the DM guide with the Efreet and bikini girl- one of the teachers confiscated it from a kid in class. I thought that the cover was cool and went over to the kids house to play later in the week.
Peace
Morty

Ah room zoom zoom, ah room zoom zoom. gilly gilly gilly gilly, gilly ah sa sa. Come through the magic door with me and see the things you never dreamed you'll see.
My folks bought the game for me, thinking it was like an AH wargame. They didn't mind us playing it - 'good for the imagination' and all that. My mom finally expressed reservations when it became apparent that I was content to play D&D with the same 4 people to the exclusion of other forms of 'proper social activities' (ie., sports, dating, etc). But even then, she merely encouraged me to do other things - I was never forbidden to play. In fact, when I took a hiatus from gaming in late HS, it was at my instigation (our group fell apart and I found other things to do while reading game stuff on the side).

In sixth grade, 1981 or so, I kept seeing these comic strip advertisements in my comic books advertising this game. I was drawn to the adventure the characters were having and wanted the next run of the ad to come out so i could know the end of the story. The art was cool. To this day, i don't know who the artist was. These characters fought green slime I remember and the warrior found a maigc sword to replace the one he had lost to the slime.
Now you've got me remembering these; I probably have some in my collection somewhere.
"Dimension Door!"
It must have been around 1978 when I first heard of D&D. My dad and I were backpacking in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Mt St Helens (this was a couple of years before it blew up). One night we were camping on the edge of some lake. The adjacent camp was a guy about 20 years old or so. He told a few interesting stories about a game he was playing, including how he and his friends had gone in on a miniature of a purple worm.
Maybe a half a year later, I was at a friend's house when he dug out the red box. We played a few rudimentary games that summer, and got better and better at it, soo inviting several others to join our game. Whhen Gamma World came out, I got my mom to buy it for me and ran some marvelous games.
AD&D followed, and then in High School, GURPS came out, and I bought it, and played for many years. Shadowrun was one of the most magnificent games, although I had to do some house ruling to get it to work with me and my friends.
I just ordered C&C, and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.
