Was never really a fan of steampunk or most post-apocalyptic settings, to the point where I won't even play them. The only thing I'd consider playing that comes close to steampunk is Privateer Press's Iron Kingdoms. Other than that, to quote Monty Python, RUN AWAAAY!

Oddly enough some of my more memorable roleplaying moments came from a western campaign when a friend was running GURPS Deadlands. Ahhh good times...

Romance or anything using the word "storyteller."

Oh, that reminds me, I've never been able to get into steampunk or mixed fantasy/sci-fi settings.

Man I love steam punk. One world that doesn't work for me RPG wise is the warhammer 40K one. to limiting to the players on what faction they play.

Horror. I've got enough of my own psychosis to deal with without getting help from truely sick folks.

Wild west would be a close second.

Totally ripping off something a friend of mine wrote, but hey, I agree with it... The ones I would really rather not play are Super Heroes; Post Apocalypse Dreary Survival (sans freak show mutants); or Horror.

Yep, I feel the same. Iron Kingdoms is the first to change my mind.

Not really a genre per se, but I can't stand RPGs based in books or movies (ie Middle Earth, Star Wars, Star Trek, B5, etc.). I'm not counting RPGs that eventually had novel/movie crossovers; just the ones that derive from them.

Too limiting to me, both as a player and GM.

Manga RPGs. BESM, BUffy. Anything Pop culture in nature. I think Westerns could be really fun if done right, Aces & Eights is looking a bit too detail oreinted for me to run, Having done a once over of the book now, It's lookin' to be a real time-sink. Maybe d20 Past will serve better?

No one has ever asked me to play anime. I think I'd have to do something violent to anyone who did.

Sadly I never played a rpg type game I didnt like.....I guess that means im Easy

Note I'm not talking historic Japanese, which I really like when run well (Bushido...).

4e proposes its own genre now, of dungeonpunk-anime-neofantasy-oversizedswords-etc., which I really hate.

Hmmm ... here's a "dislike" for you all... I love to read Mystery/Espionage (like James Bond, Raymond Chandler, Ross Macdonald). Give me a book featuring a good pulp detective and I'm usually pretty happy.

However, I find it to be a frustrating genre to DM/play because

1. Solving a mysery requires an actual mystery to be plotted out in advance.

2. If it's too simple the players don't feel like it's a mystery.

3. If it's too complicated the players don't "get it" and it's no fun.

4. Systems like Gumshoe hold some promise until you realize that they're set up for the players to always win no matter what they do, and at that point it gets painful to play.

5. Systems like James Bond 007 are well designed but all of the adventure modules were mostly re-hashes of the movies, which is somewhat worthless because all JB fans would have seen the movies already.

I just can't find a good way to pull this genre off, and I hate that.

Alternity's 'Darkmatter' would do it justice.

Note: The Alternity core PHB would be needed - It covers ever conceivable genre of sci-fi, from present-day espionage, with gagets o' plenty, to far-future, etc.

Or if you can't track that wonderful game down, White Wolf's World of Darkness core book is for 'mortals' games.

I agree - the hardest RPGs to run for me were West End's Star Wars and Palladium's Macross. To keep their respective moods going was difficult, and eventually both just left me burnt out (though both started out fun).

I've never played a western or steampunk game due to lack of opportunity so I can't criticize from experience, but I'd be hard-pressed to jump in if I ever had the chance. Neither setting inspires me.

Anything too goth or too anime. Definitely nothing emo. Pop culture stuff really annoys me.

I tend to dislike systems based on fantasy novels as well, but there are two that I have enjoyed reading, once I got past the d20 stat glut: Black Company and A Game of Thrones.

I *might* play Black Company if I could C&C it. In general, settings like this and like LOTR, for example, have a major flaw. Player activity is almost always a peripheral occurance to the plot of the novel. In the end, there's very little players can do except ensure the events of the novel happen, react to the events in the novel, or get railroaded through the novel itself.

GM twist options are very predictable: what happened in the books goes differently and the timeline changes.

I wish we geeks could resist the urge to make a game out of bloody everything, but I think that's impossible.
