Sell me on C&C

Hey folks! I'm looking for a fantasy RPG to start up and was wondering if you fine folks could talk me into C&C? I've been playing RPGs since the late 1970s and want to try one of the newer, non-4e games. It would be mainly a two or three people session from time-to-time. Is C&C the game for me?

Thanks.

C&C is the Six Million Dollar Man of FRPG's.

Better, stronger, faster.

Well, I guess it depends on your background.

If you like old-school (1e, 2e D&D) and dislike the clutter, strategy game feel, and over mathematic intensive 3.x D&D... you may like C&C.

If you want something simple, you may like C&C.

If you like making up your own house rules, and don't like everything "written in stone" or in a manual, and feel trapped by having all the rules for every situation in open to players, rather than being made by the DM, then you may like C&C.

If you want a system that is compatible with older versions of D&D, then you may like C&C...

I could go on.. but that's it for now.

The best thing I can say is this:

One of my players is a twenty-something actress who has worked with me first as a student than in numerous productions. She had gamed with other friends before, but came with some of them to join my C&C group.

This past week two of our regulars had to move on temporarily for various reasons, and at the moment it's down to really just her and my wife. When talking, she said "I don't want to postpone. You've made me a C&C junkie. I bought the PHB... I never bought books for games before. Can't we play, even if it's just the two of us and some NPC's?"

I find the game to be as exciting as any RPG I've ever played, more flexible than any and easy to explain. It is a joy to DM. I've used TLG Mods, written my own stuff, and imported 1e and B/X material -- my party has adventured from the Blacktooth Ridge to the Isle of Dread and just recently experience S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (man my group was cold -- they wanted nothing more than to eradicate this "alien weirdness" from the face of Aihrde, where I set it!)

I honestly can't say enough about C&C.

I can tell you that so far once my players manage to discard the 3/3.5 mindset on feats and whatnot they all come to enjoy the system. And that has not taken long. Several of my players had only played 3/3.5 before this so had not been exposed to anything else and no one has complained once they wrap their heads around how the siege engine works.

Why bother with an explanation when the answer is all that matters?

Its not for everyone, but I suggest you check it out, ask questions, and decide for yourself.

We obviously like it well enough, or we wouldn't be here.

My group started back in the late 70s/early 80s with OD&D and AD&D. We all got out of it with 2E, and then got back into D&D with 3.0/3.5. We got burned out on that very quickly-that many rules just sucked the life out of the game. C&C brought the fun back into our gaming and everyone was amazed at how fast it ran and we actually concentrated on playing the game instead of filtering through rule books every ten minutes.

I believe C&C is THEE perfect game for what you have in mind. Char-gen/equipment is very fast and the game rules basically are easy to understand.

Read, roll and role-play. Done.

Welcome HLHartman! Glad to have you with us.

Enjoy the game.

For the sake of providing a fuller picture, I'm going to outline both good and bad things about C&C for you, HLHartman, insofar as I know what they are to begin with.

Good Things:

* At its core, C&C is simple and convenient for story-oriented play.

* It has a clear and obvious method (the attribute check) for adjudicating almost everything.

* It's very convenient for house-ruling and homebrewing.

* The community is very friendly and welcoming, and is very active. There is a ton of remixing and general fiddling about that is very healthy. Straight-up, the best Play-By-Post I've ever been involved in is C&C. There are good people around here, honestly.

* The game is very reasonably priced. All you really need is the PHB & Monsters and Treasure (there is no third core rulebook). A "full kit" for C&C is less than half the cost of the core rules for D&D.

Bad Things:

* The rules do have a few warts: (I think a bunch of people dislike the encumbrance rules, and I dislike that weird counterintuitive issue with class abilities.

* The PHB is not as clear and well-organized as it ought to be. Some of the above rules weirdness is compounded by this. It tends to mix flavor text with mechanical bits rather too freely, I feel. We all like to heckle D&D 4th Edition around here, but one place where I think they do better than C&C is with regard to the organization and general layout of the PHB.

* Getting at errata and/or official gameplay FAQ is a pain in the butt. It should be an Official Page someplace but instead we have to wander around in these fora.

* The community is rather less friendly and welcoming when you try to have an earnest discussion about C&C's flaws (see above link). Some folks are a bit too fanatical about how awesome C&C is, unfortunately. It's only natural, really: When a thing is your creative offspring and your livelihood, that kind of thing happens. : ]

Anyway, the best way to really decide if the game is for you is to read the quick start rules:
http://www.trolllord.com/newsite/cnc/ccqs.html

That's really the way to find out if it's for you or not.

Anyway, hope you find what you're looking for. : ]

Thanks for the feedback!

And thanks for the warm welcome!

I will delve further into the links provided, and I have downloaded and printed out (poor printer cartridge!) the QS rules.

I am looking for a game similar to OD&D/AD&D, with a 3.5ish twist.

This just may be the very game for me.

Thanks, again.

Well, you've found it. C&C is really a great game that gets you into the action fast, but can be just as deep as any AD&D/AD&D2E you've ever played. And the dynamic Seige Engine rules make coming up with rules for any situation easy as 1-2-3.

The C&C PHB is cheap to in both print edition ($20.00 US) or in .pdf form ($10.00 US).

C&C is very accessible, and does not invalidate all of your older D&D material either. Very easy to convert old modules and the like, even on the fly.

Enjoy, and welcome.

As others have already said .....C&C is what 3rd edition should have been !

Well then I think you will love C&C, if you don't I would only guess your misunderstanding something important, so be sure to ask us questions to make sure you do understand everything as clearly as possible.

Even so, C&C isn't for everyone, but right now it sure sounds like it is certainly for you.

It truly is a wonderful system that throws your players right into the thick of the game with very little explanation of rules necessary. I've run the game with one person and as many as eight and every time people liked the fact that they were done with their characters and playing the game in 15 minutes or less. It has quickly become my personal favorite. And with GG's Upper Works lurking just on the horizon my group is set to play C&C for quite a while .
