Custom Dice? C&C Society Related

Post by serleran »

Does anyone know how expensive custom-made dice are or would be? I am thinking of something very specific for the Castles and Crusades Society, but need some idea of what to expect before pursuing forth... I'm thinking either Gamescience or Q-Workshop, but I don't know what either would charge.

Anyway: so to not be vague, and please, don't take this idea away from me...

custom d12. On it, the letters to the C&C motto: Alea Iacta Est.

I just thought it would be cool. A very nifty Society offering, or something unique to have as swag...

I wish I knew but I'd certainly want some!

I'm popping into my FLGS and I think they did some not too long ago (there were 6-siders though). Maybe I might be able to get a lead there.

Sen the Collector over on the Necromancer boards would know. Or at the very least have a darn good idea, since he is so into collecting dice, and I remember him posting about getting custom dice made.

There's a couple sites that advertise this I was looking at last week. Between .75 cents and 1.50 per face I believe.

Not terrible? For a d12 you looking at $10+ per dice! Only if you order a 1,000 or more does it look to get into a price range I would be willing to pay.

I think there are other companies now doing laser etching on dice. I'm not sure if they would do custome jobs, but hey it never hurts to go around and ask.

I work right next door to Composite Effects, a custom prop and prosthetic company. They are the ones that made the masks for the demo that Andre and I brought to Lake Geneva Con (for those who saw it). I will ask them and then repost. What would you want the dice made out of?

I did inquire (in passing) and there are a few companies that do it... and for much more reasonable rates. Obviously it also would be dependent on quantity. I'll get more info.

Just within the past week I've been exchanging e-mails with Chessex about custom dice. They've been quite easy to deal with. Here are the prices:

1-25 dice: $1.00 per engraved face

26-99 dice: $.75 per engraved face

100-199 dice: $.60 per engraved face

200-499 dice: $.50 per engraved face

500+ dice: $.42 per engraved face

With those prices, is it all the same cut? I mean..same engraving on one particular die, or can you get a mix of d4's, 6's and such.

I imagine it is the same die -- changing it changing the number of "pieces." That is, 50 d4s and 50 d6s is not 100 dice... it is 50 of one, 50 of the other, with relevant charge applied.

Yeah, I would guess it's all the same die type, and I dunno if the price changes if you have fewer faces -- I was only asking about D10s.

It seems that chessex only does six sided dice. I'm gonna go next door to CFX and see what they can offer.

Ok..so I talked to CFX. The short answer is yes, they could make anything we wanted, exactly as we wanted. However, since they do all custom work instead of using blank dice and etching them, they would have to mold each prototype cast. So..not cost effective unless we were talking a rather large order.

Nope -- e-mail them about which type of die you want, and they'll tell you which colors they have available. I think they'll do any of the usual die types, though you might be limited on color options.
