I have always felt that the uniforms from the civil war were the finest.
True, and I fell in love with the 14th Brooklyn's uniform, which was based on the French Chasseur-a-pede from The Crimean War. The 14th was one of the few units that had their distinctive Militia garb issued to them throughout the war.....just as they are the only regiment with a City instead of a State. They also retained their Militia designation in official dispatches/orders of battle throughout the War when the New York Governor wanted them redesignated as the 84th NY Volunteeer Infantry.
This was a piece Joe Umble did about 12 years ago. Like an idiot, I didn't get a copy when I could have. Its of the regiment at McPherson's Ridge fighting against Archer's Tennessee brigade just prior to the arrival of "The Iron Brigade" of the West. It was near the 14th Brooklyn where General Reynolds was killed on July 1st 1863 in Gettysburg PA. Despite later myths, "The Iron Brigade" of the West was not leading the Federal column into Gettysburg.
