A Father's Pride

Post by Lord Dynel »

Today, when coming back from the grocery store, out of the blue, my 6-year old son asks the question all geek fathers hope to hear at some point in their lives.

"Daddy, can we watch Star Wars tonight?" He asked.

"Um...what...uh, sure son!" I stammered.

"The one with the robots and the farm?"

Sure thing, buddy...sure thing."

It brought a tear to my eye.

Gotta go pop the popcorn!

WOOT! 100th post!

My son turns one in November and for his first Halloween my wife is trying to decide between Yoda and Darth Vader for his first costume. Luckily that is the one thing which my wife is VERY geeky about: Star Wars!

I cant wait for that day with my son, involving either star wars or gaming in general.

He is 18 months old now. So I still have a long wait.

Well I figure that once my son stops trying to eat everything he touches I'll let him practice rollin' the dice.

Yeah, it's been a long wait. My wife says that the six years have flown by, but I don't agree. I mean, yeah, it didn't seem too terribly long ago when he was in diapers, crawling around the house. Maybe it's because I' so anxious to get his gaming experience underway that time seems to be dragging. At least I've got him going the right direction!
Anyway, he loved the movie, and wants to know what's next. So I'm gonna try to squeeze in Episode V tomorrow!

I agree, practicing dice rollin' is important. Last Gencon I had my son with me and Gary got him a plush D20 that he saw in one of the stalls. Its about 8 inches wide and black. My son doesnt play with it often, but when he does I smile.

I wish my son shared my dislike of Star Wars. He's a fan though.

Me youngins got into SW about two months ago and we have been consumed by all things SW! Its really really cool. I had forgotten how good those first three/second three movies were. We are deep into legos now and my girl just bought her first ewoke (and the kids LOVE the ewoks, which is really cool for me as I never did).

Again with the bullshit from the dwarf!
Just out of curiousity, why don't you like Star Wars? Don't get me wrong, I would've been ok with the films stopping at the original trilogy, and some of the dialog is a little ridiculous, but it's sci-fi that everyone can dig.

My daughter and I have enjoyed watching movies together since she was very little.

Star Wars was one of her favorites and when they re-released the original in the theaters, we went to see it and it was fantastic.

Kids and parents/grandparents, couples, singles, Rastafarians, retards, Martians, pig bitches, dorks, dweebs, nerds, stamp collectors, accountants, nerf herders, hippies, RPG'ers, lunatics, heretics, muppets, pharmacists, clowns, rabbis, minotaurs, transvestites, et. al. ~ all held hands and loved the movie!!!

Very much like my experience when the movie debuted in '77.

May the Force be with you . . always!

I don't really have a problem with the original trilogy. Nothing special for me, but not bad.

The newer trilogy is garbage. Acting, dialogue, plot...you name it I don't like it.

Star Trek rules.

My 3-year old daughter and I watched Return of the Jedi again today. Stephen, I saw all of the films in the theater, and was probably 12 and a half when Jedi came out. I was 2nd in line in my little town of 17,000 people. I was at the height of my fandom during those years, but I recall not being overly-thrilled about the Ewoks. Didn't hate them, but I was too old to be enamored of them. That's for sure. *disclaimer* I'm not a prequel-hater, but have some gripes with the newer films That said...let's be realistic. If the Ewoks had been introduced in the prequels instead of the old days, the 5 year olds from 1983 would have hated them in 1999. And, a great many 20 and 30-somethings (including myself) who hated the Jar Jar Binks (not the actor who portrayed, but the character) in 1999, would have probably loved him as elementary kids IF the character had bee in episode IV in the late 70's. It's all but a fact IMO. Either way, I'm not too pumped up for this new Clone Wars movie. At 37, I'm not really down with this janky(?) animation style they're using. The animation in the Cartoon Network Clone Wars was somewhat better. Actually thought most of those stories were okay, for what they were. But, I think the Clone Wars has been played out. Bring on(for better or worse) Lucas' live action SW tv series that takes place between ep's 3 and 4. Getting back on track with our children...My daughter has embraced a lot of things that her mother enjoys, some things I enjoy, and some things that we both like. My little one loves Filmation's early 70's Star Trek animated series. She knows the ship is called Enterprise. I impressed my friends(during our weekly Savage Worlds game) with that one. She can definately talk about the TARDIS, and myriad companions from old and new Doctor Who. I mistakenly tried to watch Farscape dvd's in her presence, until she started quoting some of the characters. Not as bad as South Park, but perhaps too much adult content. That didn't last long. hehe Personally, I can't wait until my daughter starts gaming with me. Maybe I'll start her on Risk in elementary school, some basic C&C, Axis and Allies, and Savage Worlds. At least ,that's how I hope it works out. She still needs to find her own way, as well. Which means watching and probably enjoying cartoons that suck greatly compared to Looney Toons. Spongebob's okay, but he's no Bugs Bunny. That's for damned sure. That's all folks!

To whoever mentioned the plush polyhedrons. At each con I attended I would pick up one of each die for my daughter. She's got the smaller versions of all the dice. That's a must for any toddler, if you ask me.

Yeah I'm not the biggest fan of the prequels. I can watch them and half-heartedly enjoy them, but I couldn't have cared less if they just didn't get made. I've even had a discussion with a brother-in-law concerning in what order my son will watch them when he's interested. Verdict: Original Triology first. My brother-in-law can't understand why, but that's just how those films were meant to flow and there's no suspense if you know that Darth Vader is Luke's father. Conversely, the prequels assume that you know what's going to happen so they unfold from that perspective. Concerning the acting, I always laugh at Anakin during that last section of Episode III where he's going off on Obi-Wan and Padame. Talk about melodramatic. I would like to do a memory wipe where the prequels are taken out and the Original Trilogy and Thrawn Trilogy are left in. That would be A-OK with me.

Exactly.

What's funny is that I'm not sure how he saw/remembered the original trilogy and how he remembered it over the prequels. I'm amazed that when I asked him what movie he wanted to watch, he was able to describe it. Now, technically, he could have been talking about Episode I when he was describing which one he wanted to see, but he was referring to A New Hope (I asked him in the movie if this was the one and he said yes). And I'm sure that we've seen some of the new ones most recently. Shoot, I can't even remember when he saw Episode IV to even know how he was able to ask to see it.

But mine is not to question why.

True. Simply accept, rejoice and give praise.

I am really happy that I get to share my hobby with my sons (7 & 11), they both like to play RPGs, and my 7 year old really likes to play C&C. How cool is that.

On a Star Wars note, I cannot tell you the number of times my wife has yelled at me and the boys to get out of the living room with our light sabre duals before we break something, now that is geekdom at its finest!
