A good... unexpected... expensive day!

Post by moriarty777 »

Well, for the next week or two (can't remember which), one of my local game stores is saving a sale. They apparently do this every year and it's a good chance to pick up some things that might otherwise not sell that well due to a missing piece... a bit of damage... or it was just left somewhere forgotten.

Today was their first day and having nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon, I decide to pay them a visit.

A start poking about... I see people on their way out of the store with a few things I would have really liked to have. Of course, by the time I get there, there are no other copies of said items but still plenty. The store is doing this only a bit at a time taking stuff 'randomly' out a few times a day each and every day though.

I continue looking through things and then I spy my first find. A sealed though only slightly scuffed box set of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy by Necromancer Games. I've seen this set before... and was NEVER willing to pay the $70 (or so) price tag that came with it. I was more than willing to pay $35 for it since it looked in damn good shape so I start carrying this thing around.

I then spy an odd thing on the table next to some old mini's from various lines. It was a blister pack of tiles. I look closer and they are plastic and magnetic. It had one 3x3 square tile, three 3x1 tiles, and three 2x1 tiles. I look at the original price and see something ridiculous around $29.95 but reduced down to $3. For my good old dungeon crawls these are pretty cool I think.

However, I figure it was a DAMN shame to not have more of these. Trying my luck, I talk to one of the managers who worked there since I've never heard of this product and did they have more?

He nods and tells me of this sad story of a promising company who made this product which was now discontinued. He does pull out a wooden case, and opens up to reveal a game set called Nin-Gonost.

The set was great! Loads of these dungeon tiles... magnetic walls... pewter miniatures, doors, and sarcophigi. It had a brush... paints... and interesting dice (25 of them) with a dice chart and rulebook. Completely intact!

Of course, I'm not so much interested in the game as I am for 'spare' partst. This set was also not out for sale either but was largely forgotten on top of a shelf. The original price tag for this thing was undoubtedly the reason why too (back in the day it was listed as $150 US or $225 in CDN funds). So I figure I had nothing to lose and ask and the guy 'how much if I took it off you hands'. He quotes me $50.

Needless to say I brought that home too!

When I get home, I start doing some research about the game... Got great info and a good history of what happened by searching on BoardGameGeek. I was also able to get a completely revised set of rules for the game to make it more playable and understandable. It's a shame it got shut down the way it did but given the price, not surprising. There were also a bunch of other problems with production despite having a great showing at Origins back in 2005.

I read how they also made a 'stipped' down and version to the game which was still quite expensive but paled in comparison to this set.

At any rate -- as a tool, these tiles are FANTASTIC. The mini's are a bonus (10 orcs and 4 heroes each supplied with a base), 4 pewter doors (which open), and 4 pewter coffins (with removable lids). Having walls are pretty cool too!

In terms of a game, having looked at a demonstration video and checking out the game, it looks to be both quick and fun in a hack n' slash sort of way. For the price, I really can't complain.

Between the Wilderlands box set and the game... and a couple other small items, I still spent over $100 today. Expensive? Yes, but worth every penny!

nice score. Sales rock
I managed to score a 1st Edition DMG off ebay today for a total cost of 8.95. That includes shipping so I feel good about that

Seethe. I seethe with envy.
Oh well, probably couldn't afford it right now anyway.

Kudos to you though!

I love the boxed set and just started playing in a campaign based therein. Good Find.

I purchased two suitcases of the stuff just as it was released. I opened one and the other is till in my basement with the shrinkwrap on it. The opened one is right beside it. Neat concept and I read the original rules but was really sold on the magnetic floor tiles. How cool to build them in front of the palyers eyes and they couldn't send them flying all over the table with a die roll. Never got around to using though. Just too many circular/curvy areas in what I run.

Congrats! Let me know if you really start using the Nin-Gonost stuff and how you incorporate it. I'd like to be insprired to see if I can use it instead of leaving it in the basement on the shelf. Maybe I should look at the revised rules, though finding a way to get it into my RPG games is the more likely way to get some use out of it.

Eric.
