Advice welcome for a one PC module

Post by JediOre »

Hi guys,

A friend of mine wanted to play an assassin and that is the only character we are running. His PC is now 4th level and possesses both a cloak and boots of elvenkind.

I took him through a 2nd edition dungeon crawl from an issue of Dungeon which he enjoyed but hopes to use his assassin skills in an adventure heavy on espionage, assassination, or other sneaky things. The PC is neutral.

Regardless of edition, does anyone have any suggestions for his current level or future levels?

Thanks.
In the words of my good friend Trevor, "Hey, put an arrow in that flying mummy! What could possibly happen?"

L2, The Assassin's Knot is available as a free download from WotC.

It's more of a whodunnit than a dungeon crawl, and the reviewer at Wizards actually states that it'd be perfect for a solo adventure with a cunning character.

You can't beat free!

Any city-based module would work, especially those with a lot of leads, but not definition. For example, Yggsburgh, Lost City of Barakus, etc, etc.

Yggsburgh is replete with ideas for good small party adventures. Ill bet you could come up with something there. Also check out the old classic D&D solo modules if you can locate them.

There is not too much in the published material for assassin's I don't think. Which is odd, considering how cool the idea is. I think the class was there more for NPCs

I gave an answer to a related question (thief modules) in this thread

You may find something of interest there

If you broaden your search to novels, two sources I would recommend would be

Jhereg and Yendi by Steven Brust. These are great books about an assassin making his way in a fantasy world. The later books diverge from this, but the first 2 are very on point
http://www.amazon.com/Jhereg-Steven-Bru ... ef=ed_oe_p

Another useful book is Frederick Forsyth's Day of the Jackal, which is about a real life assassination attempt. It was also made into a film with Edward Fox

Both of these sources could be useful to building your own adventures

The best piece of advice I can give for making solo neutral or good aligned assassin style adventures (and if this does not set your game design instincts into overdrive, I don't know what will ) is to think of the character not as a mafia style hit man, but as James Bond .

Think about it, James had a license to kill (and was pretty ruthless in the books).

If you make the adventure flow like a James Bond movie, you could use all of the character's skills without overwhelming him on the combat side (which room by room dungeoneering will inevitably do)

Start with the assignment, then some travel, then a mysterious incident, then investigation, then a stealth mission to get info, maybe a few fights. Finally realises there is a secret wizard lab in the forest where the Dastardly Wizard Blofeld ( ) is creating an army of golems and must be stopped. End with him floating to safety on a magic carpet as the hidden fortress explodes

Random Female NPC: Oh James!

James Bond: Excuse me my dear, you seem to have some Golem residue on your brasierre

[Hey, this forum is rated PG-13 -Ed.]
Wow, that sounds really fun. When can you run me through it JediOre ?

Jaybird216, I've downloaded L2 and will look it over. I've owned L1 since when it came out and have ran it only once. Perhaps that needs to be dusted off.

Breakdaddy, I forgot about Yggsburgh. Thanks for that.

Aramis, James Bond is really how my friend games, blended with Batman and the Punisher.

Thanks everyone.

If you have access to the Dragon Magazine CD-Rom collection, or even better, a cache of old Dragon magazines, there was a solo adventure sometime around issues 61-68 specifically for thieves and assassins. It was a test for initiation into a guild or progression to 2nd level. I believe it was actually called Assassin's Run, but I may be mistaken.

I remember that one actually! It was pretty cool but not too long!

I just checked that out on my dragon mag archive. Looks like a good one and suitable for what the OP was looking for.
