I think it may be her best HP book ~ dark, grim, sad and horrifying added to the usual "Fast times at Hogwart High" stuff and throw in another excellent teacher/character and you've got a great story.

Now if the film makers can capture most of that, we may have a great movie. This one could be the best.

I do hope it makes more sense to the uninitiated than the last one, where there was a whole lot of "huh, wha, why?" Made it less than enjoyable, actually, since nothing was explained and seemed to just jump about without reason.

Never bothered to read them. I cut my teeth on LotR and Howard, but if the Potter books get kids to read more so be it. The movies are fun.

I've been thinking I should read them. I never bothered because of the hype.

Some great ideas for magic school's and gaming in general there. But what the author does really well is capture character personalities. And there's a lot more going on in the books. A whole lot more.

Yes, yes ~ you should. I read the first 3 or so somewhat before the mania began and before the movies. They are just excellent reading.

But, I understand your feeling about the hype - it can get very irritating. I felt that way about The DaVinci Code. Everyone loved it - my wife, daughter, mother-in-law (in braille no less) - and I just tuned it out.

But now, I'm ready to have a go at it.

Harry is just plain fun and sheer entertainment with lots of hilarity. Some of the best escapist/fantasy, IMO.

And yes, ignore the hype!

Well said, gideon. She is superb at characterization! I love them all, even the ones I hate!

Looking forward to the new movie as it has to be better then the last (I completely agree with Serleran on this one... yeah, I know, I did just say that, but he's completely right).

I agree - the books get better, deeper and richer as they go along... the "children's fantasy" of the first two gives way to some pretty strong writing and characterization, and some pretty provocative ideas.

PS - I can see how the last movie would not be good for those who came to it on its on... I also want to say that the actress who played Tonks was an A1 hottie!

I must confess, I have not read the books, but the movies have been pretty good. So much so, that they may actually entice me to read the books.

Neat. It's interesting to see how the series has pretty much turned into Dark Fantasy.

While this is pretty much true in the books, the movies, I think, have taken it very much to heart with their visual style.

Oh, dear Crom, no! The DaVinci Code was terrible. Angels & Demons was much better.

On the other hand, I very much enjoyed all of the Harry Potter books except the last one (it was okay, but I didn't think it held up quite as well as the others).

Bite your tongue. I found The DaVinci Code to be quite entertaining, and that's a high compliment from me as I'm not big into mystery thrillers.

Cool. My brother is reading the series now. It's really cool to "talk Potter" with him so long after I've read the books myself.

The 6th movie looks really cool, but I have yet to watch #5 on the DVD I received for Christmas 2007. It was my wife's favorite book and she didn't get to see the movie, so I am reluctant to see it without her. I'll do it, though, and then go see #6 in the theatre.

EDIT: I sent you an email, Peter.

Im thinking about giving all the books a second read through before I see the next movie. Great series of books with brilliant continuity.
