Heading Home from the Con!
Heading Home from the Con!
What a great time! My brother, son, and myself enjoyed ourselves immensely. It was awsome to actually meet the majority of the Trolls and chat with them awhile. It was really an honor to meet everyone and get to know them a little bit. I would have really liked to get in on a C&C game with Davis (next time!). I did, however, shamelessly get Davis, Steve, Peter, and Jeff T. to sign my PHB!
Purchases
For starters, I got the Upperworks boxed set. For those who could not be there and have to wait for it, well, I feel for ya. It is sweet! I can't believe how much stuff is crammed in this box. On a cursory flip through the contents, I was really overwhelmed with the amount of information here. You can't help but know that there is a zillion years of gaming sitting there in front of you.
I then finally broke down and got the special ed. PHB and M&T. Love them. I have been wanting these for a long time, and let me tell you, they are beautiful to behold.
And lastly, I got a copy of the Codex. Why didn't you people tell me how awsome this was? What the hell folks. This thing is PRICELESS.
It will be instrumental in my writing campaign materials that tie in with the timeline and cosmology; I have the After Winter's Dark folio, but it pales in comparison when it comes to fleshing out various lands and such.
Now, I face certain doom with my wife, who doesn't know how much I just spent....Oh well, I can die happy with my TLG goodies clutched in my feverish hands!
I want to say again, for those who have not met Steve, Davis, or the rest of the gang, they are great people. I'm really glad I got a chance to talk with them a while!

I envy your trip and purchases and am looking forward to being able to get the Upper Works when they release.
On a positive note for me, my wife said she has grown tired of my incessant grumbling during August of every year and she wants us to start planning to try and make GenCon in 2010 (got something else going on next year).
So, hopefully I'll get to finally make it then. For now though, I'll continue to envy those of you who got to make it this year and pick p some sweet TLG stuff.

Good report, thanks for sharing.
Heh, and yeah a bunch of us have been touting the Codex of Erde for years. Lots of info on it and other Aihrde goodness down in the Rings of Brass forum.
It sounds like it will take some time for people to post reviews or mini-reviews of CZ Upper Works, because it's so massive.
Can't wait to get mine.

Yep, we've been talking about the Codex for years, you've just never read the right threads. Glad you finally discovered it. The writing is far from the best, but darn is the material good!

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I hear ya DD. I'm almost in the same exact boat. I got tired of missing it and I'm planning the trip for next year. I'm hoping a $2000 budget will be enough.

Dang it. This joker's 75% off at my FLGS...I guess I need to buy it. I keep hearing good things about it, time to find out myself.

The Codex is great background info for the After Winter's Dark campaign setting... lots of more specific details, and the only main differences are in some nomenclature and the "Players" section which is d20 states and info (though good still too for ideas). The fact that it also contains an adventure setup written by Gary that leads in to Lost City of Gaxmoor is a great plus as well.
I've not been shy about how much I've enjoyed this setting in my campaign and group over the past year!

$2000 was enough for me in 2006. Flew from Tucson, stayed in a hotel (not near the Con though, decent buses though) and still blew about $500 on gaming goods and food. Plus my daughter went with me.

Good. I'm pulling $1000 from our tax return next year, plus I'm saving about a $20/week, starting last month. I've already figured/estimated that the hotel will be about $240 (my 1/3 of the price) and about $215 for a plane ticket. Figure in $200 for other expenses (food, any extras) and I'm guessing about $1300 or so in straight spending money. I was hoping two grand was going to be good.

Hey Piperdog, It was really great meeting you, your brother, and your son at the booth! I hope you enjoy the new stuff and get a lot of mileage from the material. If you come back next year be sure to roll by and let us know how things are going. If your wife gives you grief, tell her we FORCED you to buy it!
On the other hand you are a lot more fit than the trolls so she probably won't buy that line! So GOOD LUCK with the wife!!!
