Question RE: CZ on back order at Borders.com

I'm not sure how the publishing business works and all, but here's my situation. I got a Borders gift card and used it to order CZ online. They are telling me it is on back order and they don't know for sure when they will be able to fill the order.

What exactly does that mean? Does it mean they are waiting for TLG to send or print more copies of the book? If so, how does that work? What determines when that will happen? When they get enough orders? Is it just some nebulous "someday" in the future and no way of telling?

I don't mind waiting, but I want to make sure I'm actually going to get the book eventually. If not, I'll cancel my order with Borders and buy CZ somewhere else. As I said, I don't know how the industry works.

I don't know the answer, but would like to commend you on use of the word 'nebulous'.

Kudos, my friend.

It means, since CZ: UW is only a few days old (just barely released) distributors don't have it, so the end-target of those distributors (ie, stores) don't have it, either. That means the only way to get one right now (as in, immediately) is to have been at GenCon (or pre-ordered it from the Trolls) -- otherwise you have to wait for it to be made available to the retail public which can take a few weeks, but is not directly possible to know.

I feel that it's nebulous and ephemeral!

PS- I dont know the answer either, are you talking about the new Upper Works boxed set or another CZ product? Upper Works hasnt reached distributors yet.

Your better off ordering direct.

Heh, the product is nicely discounted. It's not a bad idea to wait for it if you can overcome the nebulosity of the availability of said item.

Sorry, I meant CZ: Yggsburgh, not UW.

That changes things. Thats been out forever. Well, years. I would order something else and look elsewhere, like TLG, for Yggsburgh.

Hmm, that is an entirely different prospect.

Back order generally means one of the following:

1) Company has sold more copies than they have in stock

2) Company is waiting to receive initial order and is thus, pre-ordering

Getting C&C materials into what is called "the book trade" (bookstores and the like) is a recent development as, as I understand it, it requires a different scheme of distributors and costs and so forth -- it is also the next major step to TLGs success as having RPGs in these venues is a good thing.

I would think it would be relatively easy to get CZ: Y online, as the book has been in print for three years or so, but, online bookstores (because they are a different kettle of fish) might not have it yet, for the above reason (ie, the book trade is new for the Trolls.)

Best bet is eBay, Amazon (because they are not a book store, regardless of what some might say), and direct order from TLG itself.

And, just a note, if you look at TLG main site it's currently half-off when ordering direct. I'd call Steve.

Techno,

Get your money back. Borders is going to have to pick that up from Diamond Distribution and Diamond doesn't currently have any in stock, nor have they put in a recent order for any (I process the book trade orders), so what's happening is the bookstore is trying to keep you as a customer by showing you that they are a "full service" book store, when in fact they are not.

What will happen now is they will put in an order for 1 book through Diamond and Diamond will sit on that order until they can order enough to cover their shipping and fulfillment costs. That could be 1 day, or 1 month.

Best bet is to order it Through the TLG website or go to your local shop.

Sorry about this poor service. I had some nice discussions with some folks at Gencon that may offer at least a short term fix to this never ending problem.

Steve

That's what I thought might be the case. I'm not upset about it or anything, I just had a gift card and was looking for something to blow it on. I'll cancel the order with them and get it somewhere else.

Thanks for the info.
