Gaming in BFE

Post by DangerDwarf »

I live out in the country....for real. The town I am in has a general store and a church...that is pretty much it. So, not a huge gamer crowd around here.

I've been fairly lucky though in finding players, just getting to game regularly has always been a struggle.

Between work, family, a 20-40 mile commute for most of the players to reach here, and numerous other things our gaming has been suffering a lot. we'll do good for a bit then it falls off.

I'm tired of the on again and off again gaming. I think I'm just going to focus on a small game with my wife. Maybe let her play2 characters and I'll round it out with 1 NPC. At least then we can get some gaming done with regularity.

I'll enjoy the bigger group gaming if/when it becomes available, but my main focus will be on getting a small home game going.

Now, if only my son would get interested in table-top RPG's and just not console RPG's.

I know what you're talking about. Despite living in a pretty populated place, I have to drive 90 minutes away to play a 4 hour game. My schedule is part of that, but it does suck, especially when games get canceled -- I look forward to killing and looting on the weekends. :)

I hear you on that one. I have gamed out in BFE on several occasions to bring the game to the people who live out in the wilds of this awesome country. To accomidate the players who live out in BFE, we have set up a webcam for our games where other players can play remotely. This has worked well, but at times requires some IT support.

Good luck in in your small home game DD. I have found that some of the best games are small. And should you happen to find other gamers willing to commute, best wishes in all gaming endeavors.

You know that's the same weekend as Winter Dark here in LR. I was kinda hoping to have you here for that. I take it you won't be here then?

I've had similar problems as well, DD. I used to live in a very small town. I had to enlist a couple of the local kids to play. I wasn't sure it'd fly at first (they were definitely not of the gaming stock), but all worked out in the end. That ended up being an 18-month campaign that was pretty fun.

I'm near a bunch of gamers now, but time constraints are limiting our gaming action. I got a SWRPG game going in the meantime with two people while waiting for my C&C game to take off. I fear we're not going to see much action until after the beginning of the year.

Just take it however you can get it. If that's with one player, two players, of three players, as long as everyone is having fun that's all that matters. Good Luck!

Nope. I was already booked for DFW. *chuckles* And I'd mentioned it to Steve often enough that my next con was in February.

One of my WFRP players went back to UT a couple of weeks ago, and in the middle of an adventure, but it didn't stop us. We put a cell phone on speaker phone and he participated old school. No maps, minis or computers, he just talked and listened while another player rolled dice for him. It worked out great.

I mention this because if you can get your wife to play, you could have another player phone in and let your wife roll the dice for them (at least until cell phone companies come up with a die roller for your cell ), then you could at least have two players with two characters each.

Failing that, how about running your wife through some single player games with 'guest NPC's' representing people she meets that adventure with her on the way, kind of like Red Sonja. This way she only has to concentrate on her own character and the other folks she meets may help her, compete with her or even help her and then try to betray her. For ideas on single player adventures, check out some of the One on One adventures for D&D (the O series) from the eighties...

I grew up in just that place, and if there's any good news to be had it's that once you find a player (if you find a player) you don't have to worry about losing him/r to another game

This is what I will most likely end up doing. Have a cast of "extras", npcs she will meet up with from time to time, to give aid when needed and run a solo campaign for her.

Gives me my gaming fix without the frustration of trying to work around the work and family schedules of people who live a bit away.

We've had some pretty good groups (one even had 5 players) going, but it has generally been taking about two months before scheduling and life take its toll on the group and the campaign ends up petering out since all of us have wildly differing work schedules.

My home group kind of petered out about a year before I moved (the younger guys graduated and went to college). Then I moved and didn't game again for something like 2 years, as I didn't know any gamers and the local game store focused on M:tG or 3.x and by then I was doe with that system. Then I found C&C and that lead to a couple of PBP and chat games, which also lead to a couple of Skype games which have lasted for almost 2 years now. Scheduling can be hectic for face to face games, but with Skype and MapTools, I get my weekly fix.

Anywho, game as much as you can and enjoy every moment of it, wether it be one on one with your wife or in a group (however you meet to play).

How's the gaming there Peter?

I see that last year they had quite a few different board games going.

My wife and I are hoping to make Winterdark this year, but if that's not doable Dallas is right up the road from us.

Me and my wife did some talking and we're going to move forward on just a group of me and her. Some one on one gaming.

I'm sticking with my initial intent on running a game set in the Haunted Highlands, just be using 4e instead of C&C for it. She's completely sold on 4e and I agreed with her that for 1 on 1 gaming, the healing surges and extra hitpoints will likely be better for what we're fixing to do.

Guess its time to start converting the Golden Auroch and DB1-4 into 4e stats.

Grrr....Didn't I say before that I was tired of converting stuff?

4E? 4E?!?!?!??!?!?! You're dead to me, DD. Starting.... now!

PS- I really am just horseing around, I hope yer game turns out well. I liked some of what I read on 4e (bought the gift box) but not enough to be motivated to play. Of course, this may be because Im just lazy

It's pretty fun. It isn't my "Be All End All" of gaming, but I enjoy it for what it is. And despite internet cries of "4e makes you turn into a power-mongering, no imagination-having, drooling MMORPGer." I have found that it lends itself well to various styles of fantasy. I've had no problems running sword and sorcery types games with it.

I don't care for everything about the system, but it is most assuredly not "The Debil".
My wife and I both like C&C and 4e. I'm more of a C&C fan, she's more of a 4e fan. I think she likes having the options more readily laid out for her in 4e than the more free-form method of C&C.

I've thought about it. I'm just not sold on that idea yet. I like sitting around a table and seeing folks face to face.

I absolutely hate talking on the phone, which I view as no different than voice chatting on the puter. So,makes it a bit rough for me to get motivated enough to try.

Also, work schedules can make online gaming impractical, unless you do PbP gaming, but those can get sooo slow as to be nearly useless.

Honestly, DD, I think it would be a whole ton easier to just add Healing Surges and add the Con score to starting HP than to convert C&C to 4e. Actually, you could add quite a bit of the 4e stuff to C&C with very little difficulty rather than vice versa. And if you're set on using the C&C material, and are tired of converting things, I'd definately go that route instead...

Ahhhh....but you forgot the most important part of my post in regards to 4e...
My wife and I both like C&C and 4e. I'm more of a C&C fan, she's more of a 4e fan.

Wife - 1

Dwarf - 0

EDIT: Besides, it was simple enough to 4e up the critters in the GoodmanGames 1st Edition module The Golden Auroch. Already got that done and it didn't take any time at all surprisingly.

Hey DD, feel free to bring your 4e stuff to Trollcon or Winter Dark and run some 4e. I know we had a 4e game rolling on Saturday at Troll Con VI this year.

That'd be cool.

We're planning on making Winterdark, hopefully it will happen. If so I've got to bring my newly acquired leatherette C&C books too for some trollish (and TLG board member) autographs.

Wow. You're about two hours away from my neck of the woods.

And for those who don't live in Texas, DD really is literally in the middle of and off to the side of nowhere. Basically, his home is the half way point between here (DFW) and there (Houston).

Poor DD. Why are you there? Some specific job?
