Get 'em Before They're Pulped!!
If you've not gotten the Lejendary Adventure stuff from ICGD / HekaForge, you need to -- and quickly. The guy running it says everything left is hitting the recycler on Monday....

Wait a sec...I thought that LA was going to come back after a while. I thought that the hiatus of LA material was a temporary thing. I wouldn't think that they would get destroyed if they were only going to be gone for a while.
I know Mrs. Gygax wants to focus on CZ and all, but this sounds ominous. I'm not trying to be snarky, but is something else going on? Did I miss the memo?

It should sound ominous because it really seems like it is.

I am replete with ominousity. Or is that animosity? UNKNOWN, BUT I RAWK!
As far as the license goes, I am not in the know about such things but it seems as though they probably want to go with a whole new line when they relaunch. Maybe a second edition or a cleaned up and concise version of the rules.

I do not consider it ominous. Its a legal matter, as far as I understand it -- since the license is taken away, so is the ability to sell the products that used the license. And, since they cannot be sold, they are a "waste" of space and money (used to keep them stored indefinitely) so the most logical choice is to destroy leftover stock.
I don't like that concept, so I'm doing what I can to save them...

These people no longer have a license to make or sell LA, so their stuff has to go bye bye. Someone else will be making the new stuff, presumably Gygax Games with Spencer Stewart at the helm.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Maybe they're going to launch it under the Gygax Games banner and they want to TLG stuff gone. Just speculating...or wishful thinking. I wish I could afford the LA stuff, but I just dropped $800 dollars. Might be able to spring for the Essentials box.

Unfortunately I'm a bit strapped for cash or I'd be getting the two books I don't have (Beasts of Lejend & Lejend Master's Lore, premier editions).

Thats what we were doing before it got yanked. I expect folks will be waiting a long time to see the LA line again.

BLAST IT!
Guess I'm spending some cash... Guess I'm going to get screwed big time by UPS too!
I tried sending an email a few weeks ago to see if USPS was an option but I never got a response. I can only imagine what the brokerage fees are going to cost me through UPS.

And if it was...why was it not successful the firt time round.
The system itself isn't really discontinued. What is essentially happening is that the license holder has pulled the Lejendary Adventures license and starting their own publishing venture. Hekaforge produced the first incarnation of the rules and TLG was in the process of producing the second incarnation before this happened.
Is it worth it? Really it depends who you ask. I don't play it and have yet to try it but I will say yes. It was Gygax's last designed RPG, That said, it is very different from the D&D / AD&D which might be harder to get into if you come from that sort of gaming background.
Why was it not successful the first time round? That's a harder question to answer but I'll hazard a couple of guesses:
Heckaforge seems to be a small company and even though they got the game 'out there', they may have not had the means to properly advertise or distribute it to a massive scale. Some saw TLG as not doing enough with the license. They produced the Essentials box set which is a basic presentation of the rules to get you going with a bunch of adventures but the license got yanked before the core rule books could be released (the Player's Guide was virtually complete to my understanding). However the license holders believed it was in the best interest for all involved for TLG to focus on the Zagyg material instead.
So... the hope for fans of the system rests in the newly formed Gygax Games. Since it may be some time before they get something out, people who have an interest *may* want to pick the older material sooner. At the very least, it'll be something of a collectible.
I presently have the Lejendary Essentials Set as well as the Living the Lejend sourcebook (both by TLG). I was probably going to order the More Beasts of Lejend next. When I saw that the original incarnation of the stuff was about the be pulped, I decided to shell out to get the 3 core books which, at $25 is a bargain and will help supplement my newer TLG LA material.

It was fairly successful for an rpg in this modern market.

We've all missed the memo. Gygax Games has been silent on the matter, since the licenses were pulled.
LA is a great game. If you can, purchase it and see for yourselves. It truly doesn't matter which version of the rules you purchase, you'll enjoy it, and the price has never been better.

I agree LA has a lot of great ideas, lots of stuff worth reading and learning, but I certainly have not fallen in love with it. I am no more likely to play LA ever gain then I am to play GURPS or 4E ever again. Its an OK game with lots of great Gygaxian creativity, but I would never expect anyone to love the game itself.
It will be very much an individual thing, just like C&C, 3E, 2E, 1E, OD&D, Paladium, RIFTS, etc... is. You may like it. You may love it. You might also hate it.
Buying the stuff was worth it to me just because it was written by Gary, and I always liked how he thought, how he designed things, what he paid attention too. The system is workable, but it certainly wasn't something I fell in love with.
So I'm not going to say you will love LA for its mechanics, but if you have always liked how Gary wrote things, his ideas, I think you will find LA very worth buying. Lots of good ideas, lots of details, lots of great Gygaxian flavors, but I didn't like the mechanics, especially the spell casting. I did love the flavor of it, I just hated the mechanics. Too complicated. However, if you hate "Vancian" type magic, you'll very possibly love how LA does it.
I can't think of another magic system to compare it too. Maybe Rolemaster? Close, but by no means a match.
Anyways, you may love LA. Its very different from any other system I have ever played. There are certainly pieces/parts I like. However, you may not like it any more then I do. You may even hate it.
Plus the lay out is sloppy, to the point where character creation is going to confuse you, so find the errata that cleans it up.
Still, its Gygaxian game design, with Gygaxian thinking, Gygaxian details and flavor. I don't think you can go wrong buying these books just for these reasons.
