Which reminds me. I told my son I'd take him to the range this weekend and let him practice some more with his .22

Its cool that you're getting your boy familiar with firearms. .22s are excellent for this of course, and far less expensive to shoot. I have a stainless bull barrel Ruger Mark III that gets far more use than my other pistols for this reason.

Yeah, my wife wigged out a little bit at first. "He's only seven!" was her deal.

I got him a full sized rifle instead of a kid one, which may have been a bit of a mistake. But he's handling it pretty well. He rocks with the little .22 pistol.

Only 7? I was out with my Dad and uncles hunting rabbit and pheasant with my .410 when I was 7. It helped that we had good hunting grounds surrounding my Dads summer home, which we also went to for hunting season. I didn't get to go hunting on my own until I was 11, though.

Yeah. My wife is gun shy.

But she's a natural at shooting. Who'd a thunk it.

The MIB are now investigating this site due to talk of crusades & guns.
Are we talking fast or slow zombies?

I was thinking a http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=5 with slugs and sabot rounds for maximal head poping action.....

A gun has two advantages over an arbalest -- rate of fire and longer range (well, some do.) Rate of fire only matters if you can't kill with your first shot or if you're going against multiple foes, and range is not the debate point (100 paces is nothing.) So, it comes down to two things -- accuracy and speed.

So, I fail to see why the gun would help... unless, as stated, you failed to kill on the first shot.

But, I am a crossbow supporter and prefer them over guns. Others like guns. They're about the same, in many ways.

Thats cool, chief. I just happen to be pretty good with pistols. I've only fired a Crossbow once and I think I suck at it.

Yeah, I used to be pretty good with a rifle (not so good with pistols) but I haven't fired a gun in a long time, simply because I have not owned one in a long time, nor been around anyone who did. Oh well. I do like the feel of a crossbow, though. Probably because they're much like rifles.

Okay, I didn't read this post because I thought it was about buying too many rpg things.

Rifles are fun, but I agree that true home security lie in a good shotgun.

If you need an automatic rifle, you can just pick one up from the nearest dead fellow who tried to defend himself at close range with it.

I don't have too much interest in guns. Machine guns are interesting from the technology standpoint. But, I definitely prefer the beauty and feel of a mechanical revolver over automatics.

But for me, older and classic weapons seem to have the right feel. Swords, axes and the bow & arrow. Firing an arrow is a great feeling, once you get all the mechanics of it perfected. Hitting the bull's eye is awesome.

Throwing knives, hatchets and suriken are loads of fun as well. Heh, I'm going to have to replace some wall board in my basement one of these days.

I can just see Laroo standing with an apple on his head while a drunk Rhu takes aim with a knife. "Now hold still Laroo, I won't miss again."

Seriously for zombies I'd take the shotgun for close range, a .308 for distance and sniping and a .44 for a side arm. For up close and personal I's day a nice light sword that is easy to swing but holds sharpness. Maybe a Scimitar or two.

Two problems with that though.

1. Not ammo friendly. In a zombie apocalypse, ammo is like gold. Wasting numerous shells on only 1 zombie will run ya out before the wave ends.

2. decapitated zombie heads could fall into debris, surviving on and biting an unwary individual thus generating yet another zombie.

Still not economical. Propane runs over $2 a gallon in these parts. Not as easily stockpiled as .223 rounds either.

Get with the program people! Or we are DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED.

A Shotgun blast to the head nearly vaporizes the zombie's head.

They just aren't realistic enough if the movies. All the zombies we put down when I lived in MO, we put down with shotguns. The key is to wait until they yell, "Brains," then aim at the the head.

Save the 223 for deer and drug dealers.

What a cool thread.

Good point DD. It's obviously that a 4 tiered plan is in order.

Time to prep and discuss . . .

Phase 1 - when ammo and fuel are available

Phase 2 - those sources run out, but scavenging the lands will turn up some

Phase 3 - all ammo depleted. Possible self building of ammo or natural gas siphoning. Homemade bombs - Molotov cocktails - gunpowder.

Phase 4 - natural weapons created from animals - bow/arrows, axe, sword, slings, club, etc.

Hmmm, what else.

I suppose it's a matter of your own regard to personal proxemics. With a maximum effective range of roughly 50 yards, the shotgun would disable a human at that range, but do nothing to halt an advancing zombie horde. I personally would prefer not to have to engage in close combat with a zombie mob as it greatly increases my chances of infection.

I'd choose a shotgun as my secondary firearm, sure. not only if worse comes to worse and I'm in close combat with said gaggle of grey matter slurpers. Or heck, even to deal with panickly and dangerous non-infected mobs whose actions could lead to my demise.

But, I stand by my assertion that long range combat with a solid and dependable rifle is a much preferable means of surviving.

Part of that plan does require us to locate and move to easily defensible locations. In fact, I chose my home due to the defensive value in case of mass zombie incursions. It is a solid brick place, only two possible zombie entrances and is two stories with large windows on the upper floor which make great shooting platforms with high visibility of the entrances. I can easily bar the doors, pick off zombies at range and fire from the relative safety of the up stairs when the zombies close the distance.
