Who should play Bilbo Baggins?
Who should play Bilbo Baggins?
The hobbit is slated for 2011 and ian holm might be just a tad "over the hill" to be "under it". So who should it be?

You guys are sick...besides, Ron Jeremy would be a better Bilbo than John Holmes, IMHO.
Seriously? I like the Ian Holm Bilbo. I think that it would even be done, sans the CGI, but with a lot of makeup. Maybe a Paul Rudd or a John Cusack would work, but I don't know.

Yep, we've all talked about this quite a bit here. It's gotta be Holm.

No one, until the first three movies are remade, properly, and the Tolkien Estate gets its promised money.

Actually I agree. I have tried reading through LOTR and just can't finish it. It's something about Tolkien's style that does me in. I can read tech manuals, history books and one of my favorite series is Clarkes 200X series which is very dry. LOTR is something I just can't do for some reason.

how can you not be riveted by chapters of, "On the seventh day of march we walked 20 miles and stopped for tea at 4:00. Sam and Bilbo gave each other that look again and I know one of them was going to try for the others bag end."
Wait,... that may be another book. Sorry

And yet, I've read the books literally hundreds of times. Must not be a universal phenomenon.

Heh,
I am one who loves the books and loved the movies. I grew up with them, and loved them, but I always got that some people just didn't get into the semantics and prose of Tolkien.
As for the movies, thought they were exceptionally well-done. The problem with ANY adaptation of a beloved work of literature is that every reader has their own mental image, their own set of expectations and because of the nature of reading literature we see internally our own visuals, and films will never match that.

*chuckles* The visuals weren't the problem. Re writing major scenes, leaving whole sections out, and changing the personalities of main characters was the problem.

I loved the books and the movies, but prefer the books.
Sir Ian Holm was great as Bilbo. On one hand, I'd fear that any sort of age regression would not hold up to scrutiny for a whole film. And he is what, 77? But on the other hand, the LotR series was very adept in its use of body doubles and movie magic.
Of the rumored casting choices (which are definitely just rumors), I'd say James McAvoy could do very well as Bilbo. But not Jack Black. Argh.

Not like age is really a factor. Bilbo was 50 or so when he went off with the dwarfs after all.

I enjoy reading the books very much! Just a matter of taste as with most things in life! Not everyone enjoys Tolkien's style. I definitely not going to be offended or lose any sleep if someone doesn't like it!!

I don't think using Ian Holm as Bilbo would be a big problem - make up and computers can make up some of the problems/discrepancies. Heck, Indiana Jones is getting up in age, wasn't a problem with me - a very entertaining film.

I am also one who falls in the category of loving both the films and the books. Just seperate them in your mind, and enjoy both for what they are. They are not compatible, they are not the same thing. But both mediums are truely enjoyable.

I hope sir Holm can do it. The question put forth by the powers that be is, can he hold up to the rigours of shooting two films at once? The bilbo part is larger in the hobbit too. Only time will tell. At least Ian mckellen and andy serkis will be back, possibly others too. The interesting thing is that Del Toro will be directing rather than Jackson. Del Toro might give the films a better angle based on his other works. Jackson did lots o cheesy(but good) films prior/after to lotr, Black sheep was tops though (weresheep, highly recommend). Del Toro is better minded for fantasy imo.

Here's the scoop for those who don't know:
These are the confimations for the Hobbit film(s) at this point. As with EVERYTHING in Hollywood, this info is subject to change.
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Writers: Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Guillermo del Toro
Tid bits of Hobbit info picked up:
The Hobbit films were invisioned as 2 films, with the 2nd film a kind of "bridge" to span the gap between the Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring. This 2nd film "bridge" has been stated only prior to sitting down and writing the project. Both Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have said that if there is no material to build from, and the 2nd movie just can't get written then there will be no 2nd Hobbit movie. Take that with a grain of salt because I'm sure the studio is pushing HARD for 2 Hobbit films.
In July 2008 it was announced that Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro had officially signed contracts to begin the writing process in earnest.
Andy Serkis and Sir Iam McKellen have both agreed to participate, at least in principle. There is still a lot of work to do and you never know what will happen in Hollywood.
Viggo Mortensen said in an interview early 2008 that should the "Aragorn [character] appear in any of the Hobbit films, I hope they ask me to be in it."
The age of the actors has been brought to the attention of the writers and the studio. I cant remember who said it (Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro) said that they would love to have all the characters that were needed back, but he understood that the actor's were getting older and that the films will need to get underway soon.
Peter Jackson said (about a comment on Ian Holm's age) that "Ian Holm will be involved with the project in some fashion. It's too early to tell exactly what we are going do do about that yet."
Originally when The Hobbit films were announced, the studio had a projected release date of December 2010 and January 2011 for both films. In May 2008 Guillermo del Toro said that they were "shooting for the film to be released in December 2011, and if there is another film December 2012."
